It’s always easy, and important, to tweak our liberal friends. Simply because they are wrong on so many counts, they need to be so reminded.

Currently, there is no better way to do so than by promoting Jonah Goldberg’s book, Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning

Liberal Fascism offers a startling new perspective on the theories and practices that define fascist politics. Replacing conveniently manufactured myths with surprising and enlightening research, Jonah Goldberg reminds us that the original fascists were really on the left, and that liberals from Woodrow Wilson to FDR to Hillary Clinton have advocated policies and principles remarkably similar to those of Hitler’s National Socialism and Mussolini’s Fascism.

Contrary to what most people think, the Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term “National socialism”). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life. The Nazis declared war on smoking, supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universities—where campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist.

Despite the title of this post, it really is not such a tall order to drive liberals crazy. Start talking about the Civil War, and most of them go berserk within minutes. There are a number of other topics that cause liberals to totally freak, to the extent that further civilized conversation is not possible. You know the topics.

First of all, Brian, I grew up in the south so don’t try to pull the “you don’t understand our culture” routine on me. Second of all I’m not viewing the south “with the mores of today,” because I am old enough to remember the mores of that time and you do a grave disservice to the people who lived in the south at that time who were opposed to segregation, who were not racists and who did not throw around the word “nigger” the way Strom Thurmond did in that clip you so blithely dismiss as merely being about “don’t tell us what to do.” Furthermore, if you are not repulsed by his use of the word “nigger” and you see nothing wrong with his saying that “there are not enough troops in the army to force the southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes” then it seems to me that the real problem is not with how I view the past but that you seem to be living in the past. I think the vast majority of people in the south have honestly confronted the ugly racist past much better, in fact, than many people in the north. Unfortunately, you don’t seem to be one of them.

“Just because a decision has stood does not mean it does in fact meet the constitution. The SCOTUS is not infalible, and has made mistakes in the past. They will do so again. The constitution prohibits gun control, but the courts wrongly decided it does not. Just as the courts have wrongly decided the constitution allows limits on political speech (such as election spending laws). They got it wrong.”

Forgive me, Brian if I side with the Supreme Court and its constitutional process over your opinion on the matter. IF the SC got it wrong, it will be overturned by another court (hasn’t happened yet with your current conservative court. Until then, your opinion on the matter is not germaine (no offense intended).

Finally, Brian, if your REALLY accept your argument about direct damage caused by voters then the blood of many thousand innocent Iraqi’s is on YOUR hand (assuming you voted for Bush) and not mine. After all, YOU voted for Bush and HE sent the Army to Iraq.

PLEASE NOTE – I do not believe this to be the truth. I am simply extending the logic of Brian’s argument: that voters are directly responsible for the negative ramification of the actions of the politician they voted for. He cited blood on the hands of people who voted for Johnson because of Vietnam (btw, is that assuaged by his support of civil rights?) I don’t think this argument holds water. Gun owners and free speakers (for lack of a better term) ARE directly responsible for their guns and their speech.

And regarding financing of county project, Brian, infrastructure costs should be incurred through longterm financing. The usefull life of most of these project is far greater than the life of the bond. It allows the County to leverage the revenue stream available to it and build the infrastructure it needs now. To do otherwise would be like paying cash for a house rather than taking a mortgage. Sure we pay several times what our house is worth over the 30 year mortgage but the alternative is not owning a house until you can save up say $400,000 to pay cash for it. Makes no sense.

After moving into the south from the west coast a few years back, i’d say zimzo you are so not living in the today world.

If you want to talk racism than hear this, i have been refered to as cracker many times, i have never refered to any black person as “nigger” as you write. But i have heard blacks refer to themselves as “nigger”

Nothing has really changed. The name calling still exists today, among the teens it’s really bad, yet they handle it.

I think once people get past skin issues and look at people for their thoughts and actions, then racism has a chance of going away to some extent. We, as the human race: as a whole will never agree to one religion, one law or thought process. Instead we call it racism when we do not agree…….so what’s the answer?

Since you are bashing Bush about Iraq, let me point out to you that President Wm Jefferson Clinton did diddly squat to protect our nation.

We had 6 terrorist attacks against our nation , world trade center( 1st attack1993), US Embassy’s, 1998(2).USS COLE, 2000.. American Soldiers in Yeman 1992, Khobar Towers,1996. Clinton’s NAFTA agreement also pretty much rat screwed us because it has allowed terrorists into our country un- detected. Clinton’s trade agreement with china, screwed our job market by sending businesses over seas, i wonder how much tax credit they get for doing so?

You scream about Bush and Iraq, yet by the above you should be screaming about Clinton and his lack of defending our nation.

The terrorist’s knew that Clinton would not take direct and immediate action which made them bolder in their attacks.

While I do not agree with Gw bush all the time, his action in Iraq has kept terrorist from ATTACKING America.,.

Thanks for allowing me my sidearm. Yes, I also have a safe for storage of those pieces not being used but to have ALL safely stored leaves me gun defenseless and when seconds count the gun seems to be the weapon of need. Training is much easier than being a crime statistic.

Speaking of statistics, your bibliography is interesting but seems local compared to national. Also, doctors (infused in the CDC) have been getting outside their realm of expertise. The evidense they use for their cases are sorely lacking in complete data and have been refuted at every turn. Once again, there is an agenda being played out here. Why should I go to a doctor so that I can be asked “is there a gun in my home”? That is how alot of this bogus data is compiled. Don’t succum to these ploys. Nothing but anti-gun rhetoric.

I do not accept that the south has confronted and accepted the ugly truth of past racism. The only way to accept the ugly truth of racism is if people accepted that there were racists, they did what was wrong, and if we do nothing other than be color blind, then it has ended. I’ll accept people have confronted it when people treat each other without regard to what past generations have done in the sense of trying to “make up for it” when they did nothing at that time (like the so called “apologies” for past discrimination — you cannot apologize for something you did not do, and you certainly cannot apologize for something that no one living today did, e.g. slavery). I don’t make excuses for ST, nor do I say that he was white as snow — nobody is in this age. What I also don’t do is judge him by holding his language to a standard that did not exist at that time. I don’t try to hold his words to anything other than what they state. While we state that segregation is bad, do we say that organizations like the NAACP are racist (they certainly promote one race above another)? Do we call racist those organizations that support Hispanics and not Asians? What about groups that are formed for Arabs that exclude Jews? How about wanting to support such things that would give a benefit to one group based on the color of their skin? Has this enlightened south come to realize that two wrong do not make a right?

Buying the equivalent of a refrigerator on a twenty year loan is crazy. The interest payments on the debt this county carries is enough to build 4 new high schools a year. When the budget is well over $1 billion a year, it does not make sense to spend as capital $50 million. Buying a house is usually buying something that costs multiples of the yearly household income. It is not unusual for a house to cost 3 or 4 times as much as the buyer earns in a year. I would not complain about a necessary purchase that costs $4 billion being spread over 20 to 30 years, but I do not think we’ve ever had that need. What we have is for what would be an equivalent to a $90,000 a year income buyer the county takes out a 20 year loan for a $4500 television set, that we then have to pay $13,000 to complete the purchase.

Federal action (by any country) is action by the entire country. If an absolute ruler, a king, commands the army to invade, the entire kingdom is at war. We do not have any magical immunity from responsibility for the actions of our leaders. When Clinton launched cruse missiles at a camp that supposedly had bin laden in residence, we all shared the responsibility for that action (whether we voted for him or not). When Bush (Sr.) initiated action when Iraq invaded Kuwait, we all shared that responsibility. When GW went back and did what Gorge Sr. should have done in the first place we all shared in that responsibility. The country is at war with terrorism, not just one man.

One more thing though, you don’t have to worry about “innocent Iraqis” [corrected spelling] because there are no more innocent Iraqis than there are innocent Americans — both of which stand squarely at zero.

It may be that my view of what the court has stated is not germane [again, I hope you don't mind the spelling correction] if what you mean is it pragmatic — I care little for what is pragmatic when I am looking at what ought to be. My opinion regardless is “not germane” even if the present SCOTUS does in fact follow what the founders must have meant. The relevance of any of our opinions is not germane in that sense (unless one of us happens to be a member of the SCOTUS, or we are part of the cadre of lawyers that will argue the case before the court). It of course is germane as much as anyone else’s opinion here in as much as we all wish to communicate with each other, and hope in communicating to understand. (At least that is my hope, to understand and be understood; I grant that same courtesy of sincerity to all who here express their views.)

The reference to tents in the desert is a reference (I would think) to the Maricopa County jail in Arizona. The idea of making jail an unpleasant place, and saving money is what they are all about. It isn’t without controversy. People are in that jail if they cannot post bond, or are being held without bond. They do have a very low recidivism rate. In that sense, it works well, and so some of the “tactics” are being copied (prisoners wearing pink for example). I would prefer better treatment for those that are awaiting trial — it does seem a little harsh to be punishing people that are eventually found innocent — but I also understand that it is impractical.

The world is not perfect. If someone were being unfairly treated (perhaps someone was being arrested repeated without having committed a crime because of a personal grudge) then this would be horrible. The problem is that we have humans as police/sheriffs/judges etc. The only hope we could possibly have is that there is a God in heaven and that he will ultimately see that justice is done. That works both ways — not only should those that knowingly falsely accuse be found out and appropriate punishment (hell for all eternity) be met out, but those that get away with crime will also be faced with eternal damnation (mercy not withstanding). Of course, because we are all guilty, we all face eternal damnation, mercy not withstanding.

Are you honestly trying to compare the NAACP to the Ku Klux Klan, Brian? Or are you now going to tell us that the Ku Klux Klan was not racist, it was just defending “state’s rights”? The NAACP does not promote one race over another. That’s ridiculous. Please explain to me how the NAACP promotes one race over another. The NAACP was founded in 1909 by W.E.B. Du Bois (African American), Ida Wells-Barnett (African American), Archibald Grimke (African American), Henry Moskowitz (Jewish), Mary White Ovington (White), Oswald Garrison Villard (German-born White), and William English Walling (White, and son of a former slave owning family). It’s mission according to its founders was to “To promote equality of rights and to eradicate caste or race prejudice among the citizens of the United States; to advance the interest of colored citizens; to secure for them impartial suffrage; and to increase their opportunities for securing justice in the courts, education for the children, employment according to their ability and complete equality before law.” The NAACP does not exclude members because of their race and to call the organization racist is truly repugnant.
