The recent mother of all immigration-reform discussions has gotten a bit unwieldy so I am going to try and move it up to the front page.

Our good buddy Billy astutely observed “I believe that most undocumented workers would apply for residency if there was a feasible path for them. This would reduce the number of illegals to a more manageable number for ICE to deal with.”

That crashing sound you hear is from our dozens of readers smacking themselves in their collective foreheads with sufficient force to knock themselves onto their respective office floors.

Climbing back into my chair, I would add that if we re-classified DUI from a “crime” to a “social faux pas,” it would reduce the number of incidents to a more manageable number for our overworked traffic cops to deal with. In fact, we could make a massive dent in violent crime if we simply redefined all felonies as misdemeanors.

In the Senate’s last “comprehensive” immigration reform attempt, the logistics of providing the “feasible path” required a cut off point at which those attempting to enter the country legally would need to be put on hold to accommodate the millions of illegals cutting in line. If you think about it for a second, you will realize there is no other way to create the “path,” so while the “Z-visa” program was blatantly unfair, it was very logical.

In the Senate bill, anyone who had submitted their application to immigrate legally after May 1, 2005 – in other words, the chumps – would have gone to the back of the USCIS line in order to allow the illegals to be processed.

Leaving aside the ethical and economic issues of whether it is a good idea to grant citizenship to tens of millions of border-crashers, my question to our esteemed compassionate, “Christian” readers is: Bearing in mind that USCIS has a backlog of over three million applications for legal immigration, if the U.S. government were to propose another attempt at a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, when would YOU place the cut off date at which legal applicants would be put on hold in order for the illegals to be processed?
