So it comes to this: McCain vs. (democrat of choice)
February 13th, 2008 by Brian Withnell
Regardless of which way the democrats decide, it looks very much like McCain will be the Republican. I’d rather have a true conservative, but is he “good enough” on a large enough set of issues?
I visited his website, and looked at some of the issues:
Abortion — he says he believes Roe v. Wade was wrong, and does not believe the courts should rule by judicial fiat. — a plus
2nd Amendment — signed the Congressional Amicus brief that asks the court to let the lower court ruling stand (the right to bear arms is an individual right). a plus
Health care — seems to support a nationalization of health care. a minus
Taxes — seems to have a principle of low taxes, but has a lot of programs that would require taxes. semi-neutral.
Iraq — believes we can “win” whatever that means, but it would require additional forces. Not sure what to do with this. neutral
“human dignity” (his website’s words, not mine). He seems to have reasonably conservative ideas (protection of children from porn, stem cell research should not be government funded, marriage is “one man, one woman”. I’d have to give him a plus.
Defense (not immigration) — strong on military. a plus
Immigration — too conciliatory to those already here illegal. a minus
Environment — appears to have bought into global warming as a fact rather than a theory that is hotly (pun intended) debated. a minus
Overall, he is just better than worse (he has an overall plus of one issue).

Thanks for attempting to parse it, With-meister. You go where some of us have not the stomach nor forbearance to tread.

I don’t have a lot of stomach for it either, but I wanted to know if there was *anything* worth looking at. At least McCain has somethings that I’d call conservative in his hat (a whole lot more than Clinton or Obama).
I think this November may be a hold my nose as I vote — but at this point it does look like McCain would be better than either alternative from the dems.

Joe, Brian,
When McLame came into off ice he was scoring a 90+% he now is in the 60%
The problem with McCain is not is he conservative now, but will he be conservative much longer.

This country needs an enema and will vote for change, voting Dem is the way to go!

Katie,
I was thinking more along the lines of a liberal douche! Go Kasey Kahne!
(my apologies, Brian)

Yep, elect Democrats, and we’ll all be saying BOHICA — Bend Over, Here It Comes Again!

Jack and Katie/Mark
Both of you cut it out.
Bathroom humor is not funny past middle school, and name calling is effective with only those who have no brain. Katie/Mark, you need to stop the nonsense. The symbolism of “needs an enema” is inappropriate and juvenile. Grow up.
Jack, the BOHICA comment is just as bad. Even if someone provokes you, it would be better not to stoop to that level. Grow up.
Activist, while I appreciate the apology, it would have been better to keep the board from degrading into this level. I know with highly charge issues, it isn’t easy (I’ve been known to get a little testy with Eric in the past) but we do better when we realize cognitive discussion over emotion.

Brian,
Some people just hit me at the wrong moment. Hence the apology. I will attempt to do my best in the future but you must also give latitude.
The best thing that can happen to Hilly is Billy. And between the two of them they can alienate anyone. With Kennedy and Michele helping Bo-rock, that is pretty much a done deal. Unless a wild card shows up before balloting, McZane is the man by default. I just get tired of taking the blame for voting for the lesser of all evils.
One of the proudest moments for me as an American-voting for Ronald Reagan….TWICE! I can live with that.

Activist,
I do try to give latitude. Sometimes I blow some steam myself — the time when I step in is when it appears to be a shouting match of name calling and bathroom insults abound. I have to read this stuff, and I’d rather it be civil.

Geez, ACTivist, you never let us have ANY fun.

We need to end the use of religion to justify bigotry and discrimination, not embrace it. The “majority” of Massachusetts citizens are fine with same-sex marriage The most recent Massachusetts poll, in April 2007; found that 56 percent of those surveyed would oppose the amendment. Romney wasn’t listening to “the people” he did this for higher political gain, that’s it (fact link #1 listed below)
I hope that if you had a son or daughter that was gay, in a long loving relationship with or without kids, that you would want them to have the same protections that you and your husband/wife have/had. I would never want my child to have less rights then I…. I would die in order to protect them from the ones who got in the way, I hope you would too.
If you really feel strongly about marriage, you should look at doing something about the divorce rate, the US’s divorce rate is near 50%, while countries that allow same-sex couples to wed are considerably lower (I listed the facts below – link 2 & 3) – It’s also very ironic that the very state that allows same-sex marriage also is the one with the fewest divorces in the country (fact link #4)
One last thing, Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and much higher than Atheists and Agnostics experience. (fact link #5)
So as I laid out so carefully, it has nothing to do with “protecting marriage” as it has to do with religious discrimination and outright bigotry.
I really hope that you try to look at this issue from outside your religion.
Thank You,
Johnny K
