My hat is off to Ms. Garman who spent a portion of her holiday weekend risking her personal safety to document why some Sterling families were unable to enjoy what should have been a tranquil 4th of July holiday in their own yards. In just a short visit, she was able to document a zoning violation (the four adults and child that approached as she took notes, plus the two cars in the driveway equals more than four unrelated adults, right?) and she was not even permitted to enter the residence to get an accurate head count. Why is it that since November, 2005 zoning has been unable to violate and penalize this property owner? Thank you Ms. Garman. If you ever decide to bag reporting for a career in zoning, please use this resident of Sterling as a reference.
Perhaps the better story is……
These poor people are trying to survive while many here live off the taxpayers dollar. Such as government contractors or working for the feds. With a nice pension and salary and medical care yet same people we are complaining about perhaps clean your house or mow your yard and have a hard time making it day by day, and now they are the enemy so to speak. Sad very sad the state this country has gone into. Maybe this is why the world seems to hate us. What happened to we are a country of opportunity??? and does not look down upon the less fortunate, just what happened to the days of people coming to our country for a new start especially in our nations capital.
It is a country of opportunity for people who follow the rules.
How about many residents are having their American dreams stolen from them and their children by those who have no regard for our way of life?
Now that’s a very good story. Lees sounds like a member of the nimby set, if it does not occur in my backyard, I am ok with it…
Dan I have no idea what you are talking about … peoples lives stolen by whom!!!!! In this town just get a job with the feds or federal contractors and you will have a well protected job and security when you retire. The people being talked about here are barely surviving!!!!!
“lives stolen”
wtf you reading boy ? go back and read it again..
what do jobs and pensions have to do with zoning violations anyway ?
American dreams stolen from them and their children “”"”"” That is your comment Dan.
Further decent jobs and pensions have every thing to do with so you can afford the american dream.
We have turned some countries into waste lands like Iraq right or wrong people need to have dignity and at least a decent life style and the people you are talking about Dan are barely surviving and instead of helping them you want to kick them down even further.
If you trash the neighborhood you get in trouble. That’s how it works. Act with dignity and you will get treated with dignity.
Lee,
Dreams stolen is not the same as life stolen. Illegal aliens come here and have NO respect for the law or the country. The start by not waiting in line to come here. Then they lie when they fill out any application. In OK the state government passed some tough laws regarding employment, and now with the flight of the illegal aliens the unemployment level has dropped, the local poor have taken the jobs vacated by the illegals. So, would you like to tell me that the illegal aliens did not caus e the locals to be unemployed?
Lee,
For the record, I clean my own house, I mow my own yard and I struggle to survive in our current economic environment. I do not look down upon people who are making a legitimate and legal effort survive, I look down on those who are wantonly irresponsible as well as those who exploit the poor you are referring to.
Ms. Garman’s article featured a residence owned by an “investor” who bit off more than she could chew. She is an irresponsible slum lord who has seen foreclosure on three other local homes after trashing them by running boarding houses in them. As recently as April, she charged at least 9 of the poor men, 3 of the poor women and several of the poor children (including an infant) you refer to rent on a rolling basis for floor space. For their rent payment, they got to live in piles of garbage, without heat, and with a toilet for use on the back patio. How many times Lee have you and your children personally provided meals to children hanging out of second story windows begging for food because their parents left them for more than a day locked in house without even a phone and no food? This is capitalism in its purest form, as these were the children of the employees of the property owner’s illegal house cleaning business and before than her carpet business. Businesses for which she did not legally register or pay taxes, employment or otherwise. I’m sure the pension and benefit plans she provides are stunning. She probably has the cadilac of worker’s comp too. All of these poor have as their role model their beneficent employer and landlord who appears to them to have achieved the American Dream. Is it any wonder they have no respect for the law or acceptable social norms in our community?
Lee, when you were in Iraq, what areas did you see that you would characterize as wasteland created by the US ? I am intrigued, and would like to hear more. Please tell me so that I can write some letters to my representatives, as this is truly unconscionable, and if true, must be stopped.
No one is saying kick them down, I am saying if you must live like a pig, take your mess elsewhere. Living like a pig is dignity by your standards ?
Dan where are the pictures of a tree lined blvd with the Iraqi’s kids playing????? our soldiers have done a phenomenal job but they are also stressed and it is time to have them heal and come back to America. In a way it is no different then sterling we must all heal. We all are people of the planet and we all should be respected. no more no less
Lee, I made no such claims, as I cannot back them up. You ?
“We all are people of the planet and we all should be respected.”
Unless of course you are white and making more than $100k a year..
since you asked for it..
Dan a wonderful video thanks for the link.
Lee,
“We have turned some countries into waste lands like Iraq”
Wow. My boy JUST got back from 15 months in Iraq and he has real cool videos of some buildings, some tents and some towns. But most of the other areas that they are traveling is WASTELAND. That’s what the country is all about. The Sahara Desert is wasteland too. I can name others. Are you blaming that on the war? Your brains must be goo. I would blame it on man-made global warming. Say what? They were that way BEFORE man? Well now I am completely at a loss!
Well I assume your son was in the military and I want to thank him for his and all the others over there for their service in putting their lives on line to protect us.
But it is the leadership of our country that got us into this mess starting with Bush.
Now the financial markets are beginning to collapse and next week is going to be a very interesting week in the banking and stock markets.
This article in the WP “”"”Immigrant Workers Vital, Va. Firms Say”"”"” This article is also in a way a reflection of Sterling and how important the immigrants are to our economy legal or not the have become an important part of how fragile everything is and the dependence of everyone.

Actually this mess started with Carter. When Carter’s weakness demonstrated that the US could be stepped on, the rest of the middle east took notice.
Every week is an interesting week in the stock market. Yes, the economy is stuttering, but it has yet to perform as badly as it did during the Clinton-Gore recession of 1999-2000.
Bush also has the disadvantage of the most ineffective Congress I have ever witnessed. Don’t get me wrong, Bush has been in my doghouse for quite some time, but we can’t lay all of the problems at his feet. He has a ball and chain that goes by the names of Pelosi and Reid.
Didn’t Pelosi promise to do something about rising fuel prices back when they were 2.50 or so a gallon ?

Nancy, where’s the beef ?
