Beer, Its Whats for Dinner

July 16th, 2008 by jacob

George Will is one of my favorite writers.  Come to think of it, with the passing of WFB he IS my favorite writer.  Will’s articles on baseball and politics, two of my passions, are a mainstay for this conservative.  George and WFB both abandoned Jorge Bush long before many others and frankly looking back it only goes to show how much smarter they where than the rest, including yours truly.

Will has now written about another passion of mine, Beer.  George quickly puts beer in the driver seat with regard to the devlopment of our current world.

The development of civilization depended on urbanization, which depended on beer.

This is an obvious truth, why this statement does not appear on our money I do not know.  George continues …

Dying of cirrhosis of the liver in your forties was better than dying of dysentery in your twenties.

I am going to have a Guiness now, for medical reasons, with the upcoming presidency I am going to get real health conscious.  I strongly recommend reading the whole of the article and the commentary. For instance

A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles per year. Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Kind of makes you proud to be an American.

I am on my second beer now, with a tear in my eye.  Such commentary is poetry, sublime poetry.

Reading this early in the morning prevents me from cracking a cold one - I am at work after all.

I will have to read the George Will column and hoist one tonight.

Only you could come up with such a relevant thread. One of your better posts. 41 miles to the gallon, huh?

ACT, The real question is, what is miles per gallon on Light vs. Dark beer?

Personally I feel much quicker and agile when I drink light beer, but I am not sure it actually increases my MPG.

Perhaps Stone can do an analysis at lunch and report back his ability/speed after lunch.

    Cathymac,

Light beer is all in your mind. When it comes to stout or bochbier, then you are getting into heavy dregs. That either increases or reduces your mileage depending on your outlook of “mileage”. And don’t trust Greg to do any analysis while imbibing. I know for a fact that the only thing he is into is to savor the flavor!

The 41mpg is, or course, an average. With 15% of the US market domestic micro breweries and anther 15 to 20% being imports, most of which is a heavier more wholesome brew than the light lagers we get from Bud and Miller one will see mileage vary, as per ACT most excellent observation.

However as usual there is a flaw in ACT’s analysis. It is the heavier beers that give you better mileage as they are a more substantial. The light, piss-weak lagers from the industrial domestic brewers use rice as well, which has less energy than good old wheat and barley.

This all brings the In Bev purchase of Anhueser-Busch to mind.

    Thoughts?

BTW: Guinness is my all time favorite, however after I drink a couple I move as slow as a turtle.

    Brewmiester Jacob,

Define “mileage”? It can be interpreted as light beer allowing you to indulge in activities without being slowed down. Light=great active miles. Or with the more thickerer, heavier (and meatier) brews you may not have “activity mileage” but replaced by “ga-ga mileage”; meaning it hits home quicker and outlasts the light beers. Meatier=slurred stupidity (that of course is over-indulgence and is not promoted here). U most catagorize as oney ken git looset wit the possibilities if left with suppersition…I means stuppertrition. Which i are’not becuss I lick black kats!

Notice that In Bev bought Bud only after Bud bought Dominion? I think that they didn’t want the rice brewers to screw up a good product. This can only mean that there will be MORE flavor in Dominion beers! Can you say Oktobrefest?

NR, my heart goes out to you, bud, you are a giant among men.

    Beers:

    1. Pilsner Urquell
    2. Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Pale Ale
    3. Guinness Stout
    4. Bass Ale
    5. Coors Light (what I drank by far the most of before I had to stop drinking beer)

Favorite perfect-world practice was to order a Coors Light and either Bass Ale or Guinness Stout at the same time. Let the heavy stuff warm up while drinking the Coors.

Ah, Labatts Blue.. the first time I had one, I had just ridden my bicycle through 50-60 miles of northeastern Vermont hill and dale on a hot July day. Upon arriving at our destination, the road up to the campground looked like the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb, a rather arduous climb after 8 or so rough hours in the saddle.

Got to the top, and while we were unpacking our gear, a guy came over and offered me a Labatts Blue in exchange for pumping up his bicycle tires. One of the best, if not the best tasting beers I ever drank.

    zimzo,
Since you are back, what are your top five beers? I recall two excellent breweries in Manhatten, one in the west village, the other in midtown. Can you come up with there names?

Thanks, Joe. I’m just a regular guy in an Army of giants among men.

Now, back to the subject of beer. I took my two weeks of R&R this past January. I spent it in Germany visiting my brother, and in the process found the world’s greatest beer. There is a place in the Rhon Mountains near the town of Bischofsheim called KlausterKreuzberg. It’s a Franciscan Monastary, and the friars there have their own brew of beer. It is heavenly; I’ve never had anything like it. Don’t go to Europe without finding this place. The KlausterBrau gets my vote for best beer.

    No Relation,

I lived in Germany for 3 years and got to taste every beer I could find. There was a monestary just part way down the mountain where I lived in Bavaria called Cloister-Ettal. They made a really decent beer also. After all, you can only pray so much during the day. What else are you going to do with the rest of your free time.

    Bush May Become Big Flush

(San Francisco, California) A measure seeking to commemorate President Bush’s years in office by slapping his name on a San Francisco sewage plant has qualified for the November ballot.

The measure certified Thursday would rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

Supporters say the idea is to commemorate the mess they claim Bush has left behind by actions such as the war in Iraq.

Local Republicans say the plan stinks and they will oppose it. So what else is new? I love this!

You are on the wrong thread to post such a comment. We love beer and that is what this site is about. A better name for you ceespool would be the Pelosi/Reid Truth Reclimation Pool.

We’ve had legion. Stick to a name and live by it. If you are too ashamed, Cybil somewhere else!
