In Hometown, Pregnancy Was No Secret

While the progressive’s progress through the various stages of the syndrome known as “batsh*t crazy” over Sarah Palin’s candidacy, breathlessly following the story of her daughter’s pregnancy, and now in the “what did McCain know and when did he know it” phase (more here and here), we see in an excellent new story in Time revealing that, as a matter of fact, everyone knew it.

So his name is Levi.

That’s about the only thing that I didn’t know about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy. The rest of the details I picked up almost without trying, while talking about other things with townsfolk — some who know the governor and her family well, some who don’t. It was, more or less, an open secret. And everyone was saying the same thing: the governor’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, the father is her boyfriend, and it’s really nobody’s business beyond that…

Sarah Palin is a longterm member of a group called Feminists for Life, which is not opposed to birth control. So you probably can’t tag her for consigning young people to unwanted pregnancies.

I’m not even going to speculate about what MSNBC is doing with the story …. but in any case, I blame Karl Rove.

Joe, that site you linked seems to have an archive of posts that argue all kinds of unfavorable things. . .

    Fixed, thanks

Something just does not seem right to me.

Yes call me ole fashion, I’ll admit to it, but Palin has a four month old special needs child and a 17 year old pregnant daughter. Perhaps it’s not the time for her to be running for, or taking on the job of VP.

Hay I’m all for women’s rights and all, but at some point all parents should put their children first. It’s hard to imagine that Palin is putting her family first. Seems to me she has a political bright future ahead of her, but this is just not her time yet for the VP job.

  4. kevin says:

I talked to another “ole fashioned” woman (her words) today who said the same thing. I’m not sure I agree. Wouldn’t she have the benefit of “her people” if she were elected? Think about the healthcare that child would get! I guess I understand arguments on both sides.

  5. Not Jeff W. says:

Kevin, this 17 year old girl and this 4 month old baby don’t need “her people” they need thier Mom, and I pretty sure the Gov of Alaska already get pretty good health care.

  6. kevin says:

No, I agree with that too. But I’m pretty sure no child asks to be raised in the White House. But what about the argument that their father, who would presumably quit his job, can care for them just as well? I know plenty of stay at home fathers who are doing an absolutely fantastic job.

  7. Ron says:

My heart almost goes out to this Levi kid for having to face Todd Palin’s shotgun! LOL

So let’s see some other examples: Joe Biden decided to be sworn into his Senate seat even though he was a newly-widowed parent with young (and injured) kids.

Benazir Bhutto had her third child while serving as Prime Minister of Pakistan. Of course, Pakistan is a much more liberal and tolerant country when it comes to these sorts of things.

  8. Lovisa says:

    Kevin

You know PLENTY of stay at home fathers? Amazing! I’m rather long in the tooth, but I’ve yet to meet a stay at home father who is married.

The ones you know, are they able to go back to work when their stint as homemakers is over, and WHEN does that happen? Really curious.

  9. kevin says:

One stayed home until the child was old enough to go to kindergarten. He has started working now but at a different job than where he had been. Another is the father of a 2 year old and he also watches a 2 yr old of another couple. He and his wife are pregnant again and so he won’t be returning to formal 9-5 work any time soon. He is an artist, though, so whatever that means.

  10. dan says:

“But I’m pretty sure no child asks to be raised in the White House. ”

No child asks to go to school, no child asks to do homework, no child asks to go to the doctor.

This will be a tremendous opportunity for the family. I would believe that the special needs child will get much more of what he needs here in DC. I do believe we have a little more to offer in this regard than Juneau.

  11. Jack says:

They won’t be in the White House anyway, unless Palin becomes President. The VP lives at the Naval Observatory.

  12. Not Jeff W. says:

Dan and Kevin, being raised in the White House, in the Taj Mahal, or in a palace of gold is not as important as having the attention of your mother. Yes I know two stay at home fathers and they do a great job. But neither of them have babies that are still nursing.

  13. Cathymac says:

I know married fathers that stay home, the decision is made usually based on financial considerations. My husband would stay home in a heartbeat, but alas his earning potential is much higher then mine presently.

Stay at home dads are not a unusual as they used to be. As well, lots of parents tag team like we do, arranging our work schedules so that someone is always home with the kids.

I think the Palins will be able to juggle everything just fine when they make it to the Naval Observatory. I trust parents though, some do not.

  14. jacob says:

    Not Jeff,
I really doubt you would be typing this bilge if Palin was Obama’s running mate. You are a hypocritical loon

  15. Lovisa says:

Forgive jacob, Not Jeff, he just can’t help himself!

  16. Jack says:

    Not Jeff,

Many Down’s Syndrome children are bottle fed (often with expressed mothers-milk) because of nursing problems:

The protruding tongue in combination with low muscle tone in the muscles of the face can cause nursing problems since the child with Down syndrome may have trouble getting a tight seal on a nipple. The baby may also have a weak suck due to hypotonia and may later have trouble eating solid foods.

If Bill Clinton found the time for his “expressions,” I’m sure Palin can.

  17. dan says:

Jack, I meant in the White House in the logical sense, not the actual place of residence.

Not Jeff, you’re comments are beginning to sound like “a woman’s place is in the home”.

  18. Cathymac says:

Perhaps Not Jeff has not heard of a really wacky and wild invention called a breast pump! Thousands of working (and non working) women all over the country are using them as we speak, visual image not intended.

  19. G. Stone says:

Who cares for and raises the Palin children is the Palins business.

I can’t remember anyone having such concern for the children of John Edwards or the Clintons. How about that glass ceiling cracking VP candidate candidate Geraldine Ferro. Ferro had three children with real estate investor John Zaccaro. Zaccaro being a cash cow for northeaster liberals was way too busy to be the primary caregiver to three kids. Ms Ferro was a full time teacher, attorney and Congresswoman, later to become her parties nominee for VP. No one ever questioned her ability to be a mother.

You see, Ms. Ferro was an educated Northeastern liberal policy wonk destined to help with the required social engineering of the masses. Who raised her children was not important, she was smart enough as a progressive to make that call. Ones decision to have a career as well as a family is perfectly OK as long as your a card carrying member of team progressive.

Sarah Palin on the other hand is a western woman having attended one of “those” Colleges in fly over country. This of course in the minds of the liberal elites makes her a rube.
Her decision to embark on a course encompassing both a political career and a family is viewed from an entirely different perspective based solely on the fact that she is a conservative. Being from Alaska and an unknown in Manhatten, Georgetown or Malibu, Gov Palin is not afforded the same cultural and intellectual latitude afforded the anointed.

  20. Not Jeff W. says:

Jack, I would not even compare Palin to Clinton, Clinton is a pig a liar and an ass. Simple as that!

Jacob again you venture to say what I would do although you don’t know me. So again let me help you out, Yes I would be saying this if Obama had chose Palin. This is not so much about party to me as about judgment.

Dan, I guess I am sounding like that a little, and believe me I am as shocked at that as anyone.

Maybe I’m not saying it correctly. What I’m trying to say is I believe parents should put their children first. It’s hard to think how Palin with a four month old special needs child and a 17 year old pregnant daughter, who no doubt needs her mom at this time, can actually afford to take this much time and attention away from her family. It seems to me she is putting her political career ahead of her family.

I think she could have a bright and very successful career ahead of her. But I would have preferred she waited, In short, no, I don’t think parents can always “have it all” at the time they want it.

When my son was very young we noticed he had some learning disabilities. We had to make some tough decisions about employment, buying a new home etc. because we wanted to give him as much assistance as possible. What we found in the end was what he needed most was his parent’s time, attention and patience working through these issues and working with him. Yes we lost some employment opportunities but he’s our son, he was worth it.

I don’t think that makes me a chauvinist, but rather a realist. And I don’t think this is a party issue, but a judgment call. I think Palin is showing poor judgment.

  21. jacob says:

    Not Jeff,
I find it interesting that questions of a woman ‘leaving’ her children only come up when the woman is an opponent of the Democrats. Sorry, I really do not believe you. But please don’t take it too personally, I do no believe ANYONE who says they would take the same position if the candidate in question was sponsored by Emily’s list.

If you are not a left-wing-hypocrite despite this position regarding Palin, it will come out in the wash. I will stand corrected, and ask Lovisa, I will admit it. Fair enough? Yes, I am skeptical, that is not going to change on your say so. To much cultural water under that bridge to respond otherwise.

“I don’t think that makes me a chauvinist, but rather a realist. And I don’t think this is a party issue, but a judgment call. I think Palin is showing poor judgment.”
In this world if a Democrat woman where running for high office with children, one with special needs, one 17, an going in for an abortion, if this whole ’should stay home vit-kinder’ came up as a judgment proposition, the conservative who would have said it would be lynched. Not just lynched figuratively with front page exposes from the NYT on what a neaderthal this guy is, he’d be hunted down by the NOW/Emiliy’s list Nazis and get hung literally. Your position therefore must be taken in light I am painting it.

  22. dan says:

“Who cares for and raises the Palin children is the Palins business.”

    Bulls-eye again G..

  23. Not Jeff W. says:

Jacob, hmmm for some reason I don’t really care if you believe me. Wow imagine that.

    Joe, Check out: http://www.loudoungop.com/conventionblog/
The Loudoun County Republican Party has its former chairman doing some live blogging from the floor. He mentioned the Palin pregnancy today

  25. jacob says:

    Not Jeff,
Then stop crying about me picking on you for making dumb statement like ’she ought to stay home.’ You can’t have it both ways.

I’m on the same page as the “Leave Gov. Palin’s Family alone” supporters. The National Enquire, People magazine and shows such as Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, and the like, have created a nation of vicarious voyeurs who seem to take a sense of power and influence over others by simply “judging others”. When we all “live in Glass Houses. Who are these stone throwers?
