He became famous in 1971 when he took a great political risk by reading the Pentagon Papers into the congressional records. He was a fervent opposer of the Vietnam War. He had a lot to do with getting approval for the Trans-Alaskan pipeline in 1973. And, he is a Unitarian. Gravel is an interesting character.
