It was a war in which the American people, all of them, took part. The young men couldn't wait to sign up for duty. Women worked the jobs the men would have been doing. Both were in the war effort "for the duration". The Americans didn't fight just for their own liberty, they fought for the liberty of all. And in victory, America was magnanimous. Our family had many men who were there, some of whom came back standing tall and proud; some who came back bearing the shrapnel and scars of a lifetime; and one, a holder of two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star for gallantry in action, who only returned because his mother back on the farm was determined to have her son unearthed from a European grave and brought home to the land he loved. God bless all those men and women who fought for our liberty, and God bless all those who are still doing so today.
