Presidential Debate — OBama v. McCain: Round 1

McCain is blowing it.  Obama keeps making the following three statements, McLAME is not responding, he is conceding points that are critical

1. 95% of the people will get a tax break
a. 40% of the American public does NOT PAY FEDERAL INCOME TAX
b. the 5% he want to jack taxes up on are those who:
- hire people, this will cause layoffs
- produces things, the extra cost is paid by the suckers a.k.a the electorate
2. 18B is all the extra cost from pork barrel spending
a. look at the federal highway fund
b. look at education, both of these programs while needed are bloated with unneeded items
3. he is letting obama more airtime
4. he is a dork, cut the jokes, this is not working
5. he is throwing some cheap shots

UPDATE I

- OBAMA’s idea of cutting spending is to reduce tax breaks, HILARIOUS, McLame missed it
- wonderful now they both are discussing their pet projects, preschool and veteran health care, whoopie.
- at least McCain mentioned cost plus contracting in government procurements.

UPDATE II

McCain: taxes need to be lowered or remain as is, duh.

Obama is now pulling out the McCain=Bush card.  McCain did not do a good job deflecting this, he should have mentioned that Obama agreed with GWB 88% of the time because that is how many of the bills are unanimous.

McCain is getting some time in, finally.

UPDATE III

Obama does a wonderful job of not answering the question.  The was what did we learn from Iraq.   Obama goes on a, “We should never have gone tirade.”  McCain answers that the next president will be dealing not with should we go but how do we get out.

UPDATE IV

Now we are back to who wants to cut funding for the troops.  Obama is defending his record, unfortunately McCain is not pressing him on this.

Now Obama is discussing the problem in Afghanistan saying that this is where we need to be.  McCain reminds us that both Petraeus and Bin Laden both call Iraq the main front.  Point McCain.  Finally.

UPDATE V

Obama is throwing out the old saw ‘going into Iraq was a strategic mistake’.  Maybe, but if it was, that is 20-20 hindsight.  The senate and American people were all for this 7 years ago.

Now we are getting into the Pakistani situation.  Did Obama just call for taking out Pakistan??

Obama is displaying more hindsight, our Pakistani policy was wrong.  OK, that was the approach we and others have used to decades.  Now we should allow a bunch of crazies to take over a country with nukes?

McCain is now discussing how it is a bad idea to experience defeat.  Thank you.  Obama now gets up there and says NO serviceman dies in vain.  Not so sir, Vietnam was 10 years for in vain.

UPDATE VI

Now McCain is discussing an alternative to the UN.  A league of Democracies.  Interesting, this is not a popular idea.  Still he plugs it.

Obama has stated that the policy toward Iran has not worked.  Thank you captain obvious.  The guy wants direct talks.  OK.  What will this accomplish other than to legitimize the Iranians?

FINAL UPDATE

The talking heads appear to believe that Obama and McCain tied for the most part.  There is a minority that thinks McCain won.  There are a few outliers that think Obama won.  The folks at CNN looked upset, take that for what its worth.

At the Drudge Report the voters think McCain won by a 3 to 1 margin, 50K to 18K … 72% to 26%.  Again, take this for what its worth.  I am sure that the poll at the huff post will have a different result.

AT Midnight Fox News Poll McCain 84%, Obama 14%, Undecided %1 based on 92K votes

  1. I wish McCain would have straightened out Obama on his vote back in 2006. He didn’t have one.
He wasn’t a voice for regulation…he had his arm in the cookie jar too far to want to regulate the cookie jar.

McCain didn’t go after him for his arrogance on the Surge as hard as he could have.
Finally, the old man made him go out on a limb regarding Pakistan…and we need more of that craziness!! McCain really started to shine when he laid out for the young one how we actually won Afghanistan the first time. We worked with elements that lived there. We didn’t go in and threaten them. We worked to the best end for both forces. This is how we HAVE TO PROCEED in Pakistan, but youth and inexperience made the boy trip up!!

I wanted MCCain to keep jabbing until the boy gets seriously miscombobulated. When he gets real pressure, Bambi starts stammerring.

McCain is starting to do that. But I am afraid it is not enough.

  3. McCain will have a chance to do that in one of the next two debates, though. I think he is going to be buoyed by tonight.

  4. dans says:

Overall I think it was a draw. McCain did seem to be more composed than Obama.

McCain also came across to be to be more knowledgeable of foreign affairs, but he was supposed to..
