Al Gore: Future Of Civilization Is Guaranteed

November 21st, 2008 by joe

That’s not exactly what he’s saying. Literally, what he’s saying is

As we move towards solving the climate crisis, we need to remember the consequences to civilizations that refused to take environmental concerns seriously.

BUT, there is a trick, you see … this is Al Gore, and the first rule of translating Al Gore is: Al Gore is wrong about everything. I believe he is, for example, incapable of accurately stating the names of his children, because his mind just does not operate that way. So when Al Gore suggests the “climate crisis” threatens civilization, bet on civilization.

UPDATE: “a new standard for hubris, arrogance and haughty self-importance.”

That thing about the downfall of the Mayan civilization must be pretty good. It happened to my ancestors too. A long time ago, a bunch of them were happy as larks up there in Greenland raising cattle and making good bucks off the sale of hides. Then a weird guy named Albertus Goresson began running around yelling that they were all in big trouble because the climate was changing. Sven Svensson, Ole Olesson, and all those other guys thought he was nuts and locked him up in a stave jail when he demanded that they get rid of their cows and focus on hunting seals. They say, in fact, that Ole had to be restrained physically from performing the first genuine Stonerism on Albertus.

Turned out, however that Albertus was spot on. It got so cold up there that the grass died and everybody eventually had to pack it up and go back to old Scandinavia. Darn climate change will get you every time!

Then there was that hiking party on Mt Ranier last year. Climate changed in the middle of their trip and a blizzard blew in. They were lucky to get out alive.

    Found this interesting article :

Is Al saying the Maya should have given up their SUVs ?

Dan, I think that is not far from the truth, I think that Al is suggesting the Maya mismanaged the environment as a parallel to the modern day maladies caused by so many people driving SUVs other than Al Gore.

Reading the whole article you linked, the study itself does not seem unreasonable. It is certainly possible a population could have depleted a critical resource leading to an eventual environmental cataclysm. Early man did a pretty good job wiping out species in specific areas, witness the paucity of woolly mammoths greeting the Pilgrims. Also the paucity of trees greeting the Pilgrims - the Indians had done a bang up job deforesting the continent (John Berlau’s book in the left sidebar covers this history).

But it is quite a leap to say, therefore, everyone except Al Gore should stop driving safe vehicles.
