Bombay Terror Roundup

Author | joe | Posted on | November 28, 2008 | 8 Comments

It has been a busy Friday in the city of Mumbai, India following a night of arrests and continued fighting.

Latest photos and video at India Times.

Much of the Taj Heritage Hotel has been cleared but gunshots continue and at least one terrorist is reportedly holed up with hostages in one of the buildings.

The Indian Navy has a thousand reasons to be embarrassed.

The Army has reportedly taken control of the Oberoi Trident Hotel, freeing 148 hostages.

A father and daughter from Virginia are still missing.

Who is behind the attacks? No one has a clue if Pakistan was involved although the accusation has been made, unsurprisingly. Others suspect the terrorists are homegrown.

The “Deccan Mujahideen” or Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, or someone else? No sure answers likely to be forthcoming soon.

Rediff reports it looks like Lashkar-e-Tayiba. (Read the Wikipedia entry on this group).

WashPost reports: “…the attacks bore the hallmarks of Lashkar-i-Taiba and Jaish-i-Muhammad.

The Mid-Day Home Page is as good a place as any to keep abreast of current developments in Mumbai.

UPDATE: BBC has up to the minute coverage (thanks, Lovisa).

Thanks, Lovisa, I will add to the list (realizing there is not going to be a lot of traffic/ discussion today, I just want to put some useful news links together for people surfing for info).

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving!

and now the US is going to have to respond somehow, and ‘what are the implications for relations between nuclear India and nuclear Pakistan’ and everything else. Why do the crazies always get to be the driving force of history?

“Why do the crazies always get to be the driving force of history?”

It’s because the “good people” seldom wake up until the pie hits them right in the face. Then these “good people” do react, only to be lulled to sleep again when things calm down a bit. Why do I say this? One reason: our southern border, which still leaks like a sieve seven years after 9/11.

I agree with Stay Puft’s stated concern. It looks like old Joe Biden was spot on in a way. President Obama may have a major international problem to deal with right out of the gate.

Whatever the gun control laws, it is unlikely that the foreigners who were attacked would be allowed to carry guns.

Last March, NASA reported the oceans have been cooling for the last five years. Sea level has stopped rising, and Northern Hemisphere cyclone and hurricane activity is at a 24-year low.

Environmental extremists and global warming alarmists are in denial and running for cover. Their rationale for continuing a lost cause is that weather events in the short term are not necessarily related to long-term climatic trends. But these are the same people who screamed at us each year that ordinary weather events such as high temperatures or hurricanes were undeniable evidence of imminent doom.

Now that global warming is over, politicians are finally ready to enact dubious solutions to a non-existent problem. In Britain, Parliament is intrepidly forging ahead with a bold new plan to cool the climate, even as London experienced its first October snowfall since 1934 and Ireland went through the coldest October in the last 70 years.

This is an absurd spectacle. Our advanced civilization is being systematically mismanaged by technologically illiterate lawyers responding to political pressures from irrational fanatics. Would someone please tell these people it is impossible to overturn the laws of thermodynamics?
