As a learned proponent of the global warming concept once explained to me: part of the phenomenon is, the temperature getting colder.
As a learned proponent of the global warming concept once explained to me: part of the phenomenon is, the temperature getting colder.
A couple of days of WEATHER has nothing to do with climate change.
Al Gore call your office.
Oh goodness yes: the climate is “changing” – whether it means coldness or warmness we need to drastically curtail human activity as a result.
What f–king nonsense.
History will look back at this period as one in which the human race took a collective leap off a cliff.
“A couple of days of WEATHER has nothing to do with climate change.”
Agreed, but the Earth’s climate has been changing for more than 4 billion years. But now that some have chosen to make a career out of climate fear mongering, many seem to have forgotten this fact.
Joe
I don’t know whether it’s the activity that does it, but I do know that if I’m in a room with five people and the temperature is comfortable, that same room will be unbearably hot if there were 50-75 more people.
Overpopulation is a fact.
Joe,
what is amazing is the majority of the chicken littles who scream about our destroying the planet only have slogans to shout … ’scientific concensus’ is a real hoot and typical. 1,500 scientists signed this or that. Big deal. 12,000 refused to sign that or this.
We are still testing Einsteins theories today, and the science behind the earlier tests if far and away sounder than the statistical manipulatiouns of the current computer models that show the planet if about to boil.
If you look at the trends the world is better fed today than it was 25 years ago, it is wealthier, it lives longer. The people who forecasting doomsday scenarios in the 60’s and 70’s are very quiete now, as the world was supposed to end in a mega-melt down brought on by starvation 15 years ago.
Some of the latest doom sayers have gotten smarter. They predict our doom will occur in 100 years, if we don’t listen to them starting … NOW!
Then there is the real idiots who predict the end in 2012, because the Myan calandar happens to end then.
Lovisa, So are you proposing that we kill some people to cool the earth?
Personally I think we are headed towards another mini ice age, so in my world everyone can live.
My gosh, Cathymac, you sure go to extremes! Who mentoned killing off people? Not I, that’s for sure.
When we get too many humans on the earth, God or some other being intervenes with a plague or draught or flooding, etc. Look at how Bangladesh loses thousands in floods almost every year. Then we have sub-Sahara were nothing grows and the sand storms “take care” of thousands. The horrible tsunami “took care” of thousands in Thailand and Sri Lanka.
We “took care” of tens of thousands of Japanese with an atomic bomb. Those Japanese islands were way overpopulated at that time aside from the fact that the emperor wanted to kill Americans.
How many Iraqis were killed in the first Iraq war under Papa Bush? Tens of thousands, I’ve heard.
No, Cathymac, I’m not proposing killing some people to cool the earth. S-t happens to “take care” of overpopulaton without you or me doing ANYthing.
Personally I don’t think we can do anything about the rhythm of nature. Change is built-in, and WE just have to adjust and adept to fit in. In the scheme of things, we’re aren’t very important
” that same room will be unbearably hot if there were 50-75 more people”
toss in a couple of volcanoes, and a sun spot or two and let us know if you notice the body heat of these people.
“Then there is the real idiots who predict the end in 2012, because the Myan calandar happens to end then.
The Mayan long count calendar is like an odometer, is does not end in 2012, it rolls over. when the long count calendar rolls over, we enter a new period of the Sun. On Dec 12, 2012 we will be leaving the 5th Sun.
http://www.diagnosis2012.co.uk/5thsun.htm
Cosmology or some basis in science ?
It’s Dec. 21-not 12. You are talking about a theory which isn’t written anywhere by the Mayans. Also, the reason it is believed the the earth will suffer a catastrophy is because of the planetary alignment on that day which I believe, if memory serves me, puts the earth in a quasi center of the Milky Way or some crap like that. This alignment puts magnetic imbalances on the eart which causes re-alignment and active natural occurances (i.e. volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, hurricane + winds, snowfalls where they shouldn’t be and likewise droughts). Then again, who knows the future other than GOD? I only hope I get to enjoy some quality retirement before I go…….to Greece! HA!
NoVisa,
Humans can be considered part of the animal family when it comes to instincts and survival. In the animal kingdom, animals live where there is safety and nutrition. When the safety remains but the food stock is depleted, they move just outside their domain if sustenance is available close by. Then they retreat to their safety. If food is NOT readily available close by, they roam to a new source but with breeding in mind. They tend not to breed more than the surrounding area can handle. Some humans would rather just have sex then guarrentee their food source. Others always keep that in mind. “If you can’t sustain yourself adequately, how are you going to sustain others?” Make sense?
Overpopulation? Oh jeez, Lovisa, that is so 1968. Did anyone happen to inform you that Paul Ehrlich was proven to be a complete moron? It’s true, the population bomb turned out to be a chimera.
In fact, the developed world – including China, which is not developed per se, but because of numbers is worth considering – is currently operating at a below-replacement rate for human life. By 2050 the population is going to begin a rapid decline and our progeny will be PRAYING for more people.
Joe,
Great to know that old Hitler’s “Liebesraum” theory is no longer alive. I suggest you make a visit to Calcutta, Jakarta, Bangkok, Saigon etal if you think there’s a lot of space for humans. A little closer to home, look at the rush in Metro stations certain hours of the day!
I agree that there’s space on the earth. However, the population isn’t evenly distributed. So much of Earth’s surface isn’t able to support human life
ACTivist’s theory seems based on nomadic life, where people stay for as long as they’re able to feed themselves and then move on. However, that doesn’t work too well in the modern world. There are things like passports and visas to consider. – Certain countries south of the US border are cases in point. The people can’t make enough to feed themselves, so they move to places where they hope to do better.
Lovisa, you said a mighty mouthful in your last para of post #8. I had two personal occasions when your truth was brought home in spades:
1. On a small ship in a major typhoon in the Philippine Sea, when all our equipment failed except the two main diesel engines. Just waiting helplessly under the relentless pounding of those gigantic waves for the engines to fail and the ship to roll over. When the typhoon finally and mercifully stopped, we found that our steel maindeck had cracked all the way across. Another day of that storm and 120 sailors might have gone to a watery and unknown grave. We are nothing compared to nature. That is for sure.
2. You mentioned the sands of the Sahara. Long, long ago, I once stood in those sands along the River Niger, waiting for a little paddle-wheel boat to take me downriver. I finally spotted the boat, and thought at first that it was a mirage. The sand dunes were so high, I could not see the river; and the boat looked like it was moving through the sands. I looked around me at the desolation and then down at my feet. Inches from my toes was one little, pink flower, a refugee from ecological disaster. Nature is a mighty thing. We are, despite all our vaunted technology, nothing but putty in her hands.
Even as a reformed conservative, I’ll never understand the indignation of conservatives at anything resembling conservation of resources, limiting pollution, etc. Could someone please explain why the uber right wing detests being careful with God’s creation, the one that He gave us to keep limited dominion over?
“It’s Dec. 21-not 12″
yes, it is.. typo..
“I’ll never understand the indignation of conservatives at anything resembling conservation of resources, limiting pollution”
Kevin, gross assumption on your part. Most conservatives hunt and/or fish so are very likely to be more informed on these issue than liberals. Those who hunt and fish were conservationists long before it became fashionable.. Being a conservationist is much more than talking about GW over a glass of wine.
My BIG problem with the current global warming bullshit, if someone needs fairy tales to buy into the importance of the environment, they don’t know squat about the environment and it’s importance now do they ?
If you want to talk about the environment, I’ll be your huckleberry..
Kevin, you are generalizing. There are a whole lot of conservatives who believe in good stewardship of the environment, whether for Bibilical or non-Biblical reasons. We do what we can in that regard.
The key for me is in recognizing the difference between protecting Nature to the extent of which we are truly capable and waging a feckless battle to change what is far beyond our capability to change. I can pick up roadside trash and agitate for cleaner power plants; but what to do about those darn sun spots and the disappearing polar ice caps on Mars just baffles the heck out of me
I believe that Al Gore’s version of global warming is nonsense. I do, however, believe that the climate can and is always changing. I believe further that it is my obligation to keep what we have clean and liveable. Therefore, if I ever find you dumping pollutants in the creek behind my house, I will smack you upside the head and then turn you over to the proper authorities. And God help you if I catch you dumping your empty beer cans or Big Mac wrappers in the street in front of my house. You can just ask some of our local “illegals” about the consequences of that!
Shoot, I’m even a member of the Piedmont Environmental Council. How “un-conservative” of me!
Speaking of climate, did El Jefe ever get you that jacket? Won’t be too long now before you can forget about driving west on I-70 to get to the best ski resorts. Do they still have the “Ski Train” out there?
ACT-
maybe, maybe not..
Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth’s magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms.
.
.
The leaks are defying many of scientists’ previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.
It is expected to peak around 2012, bringing lots of sunspots, flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
Most conservatives I know were preaching conservationalism WAY before the current environmental movement, they were conservationists before it was “cool”.
And Lovisa, do you not know sarcasm when you read it? Honestly, even when I try to joke with you it is a miserable failure.
Trivia tidbit on mini ice age, if not for this cooling period we would not have BEER and Scotch:
Ha, ha, ha, Cathymac. I’m laughing, I guess.
Good night!
“Most conservatives I know were preaching conservationalism WAY before the current environmental movement, they were conservationists before it was “cool”.”
Teddy was one of those…and I like Teddy.
Woof,
No jacket yet, though he says he sent it. My bad for leaving it behind, though. I’ve heard of the “ski train” but know very little about it or whether it’s worth taking. What do you know?
I’m a bit broke for a while what with the move and the month and a half without a paycheck. But I hear I’ve not to fear, the ski season is long.
Act-
The government suppressing the Dec. 2012 Doomsday news !
Don’t they have a Burlington Coat Factory anywhere nearby? Go in there with even just lunch money and I guarantee you will come out with a nice warm winter coat.
It might be pink, or have tassles or racing stripes, depending on what your lunch investment was going to be, but it’s better than walking around Denver in a windbreaker in December!
i wouldn’t feel too bad for him, he has a ski coat. the problem is it’s not stylish enough for work.
Oh he’s one of them fancy guys, ok I see.
Hey Kevin, if there is a Burlington Coat Factory you can go to the hat section and they still sell those classic 1940s versions like Tom Landry used to wear. It will go nicely with your black leather gloves, wool coat and wing tips. You’ll look just like Clark Gable.
Oh, el jefe, I know it all must seem such a conceit to you. But you’re dead on about it not being stylish enough for work. Not to mention that the hazing there began on the first day. But that’s my concern, not yours. I’m the one who left it there, not you.
Joe, I’ve got the black gloves and wing tips; hell, I’ve even got the black cane with the white point, it’s the damned wool coat I’m missing.
Kiddin’
Wish I knew about the coat deal. I just got thru giving a couple to charity which, I’m sure, went to the newest batch of illegal julios. Being a red-blooded American, you should have got first dibs. If you are that straped for cash, don’t shave for 5 days, wear a T-shirt with “Jesus Lives” (that’s gee-sus…not hey-zeus) and wrapping your arms around your chest, teeth chattering always helps, and walk into the local Salvation Army mission. You’ll get a coat, a scarf, maybe a watch cap, free meal and a cot. It will only cost you a little help around the kitchen. What a deal! Hey, I even try to watch out for you Yankees.
Dan,
“coronal mass ejections”
I am sure glad we lost our PG rating long ago because what you said is just plain nasty!
On the subject of 2012 Doomsday, that news clip is suspicious to say the least. I would have liked to have known what the Dutch were going to do about it. Don’t believe for one minute that they got rid of ALL their ’shrooms! That’s what was censored.
Kevin —
Good news. The ski train is still running. Winter season starts on 27 December. Most people take it on day trips up to the Winter Park/Mary Jane Resort. Rio Grande Western train leaves Denver at 7:15am and departs Winter Park for the return to Denver at 4:15pm. Coach and club cars. Reserved seating. Price isn’t too bad, and the trip over the Continental Divide is said to be ultra scenic. 69th straight year of operation, so it must be a money-maker for the railroad. You can Google “Colorado Ski Train” and get a very good website for details.
I haven’t actually been on that train, but I have been in the high Rockies. Magnificent place. Most ski buffs seem to take the train for day trips, but I suppose you can also make a weekend or longer of it at Winter Park. Sure must beat driving I-70 in the unpredictable Colorado winters.
I just overheard someone talking about the ski train yesterday, $59 round trip, to start up next week or so. Runs only Sat and Sunday for now, Friday, Sat, and Sunday near the end of January.
My skis are ancient, I’m finding out, and look to be half the width of what is being sold in stores, I’m guessing on account of the powder.
I’d really like to go this year, even if just once on rentals. But it might be another year before I can get a new pair to call my own.
And yeah, I understand I-70 is a real mess when it’s nasty. The train would be worth the money.
