I just overheard someone talking about the ski train yesterday, $59 round trip, to start up next week or so. Runs only Sat and Sunday for now, Friday, Sat, and Sunday near the end of January.

My skis are ancient, I'm finding out, and look to be half the width of what is being sold in stores, I'm guessing on account of the powder.

I'd really like to go this year, even if just once on rentals. But it might be another year before I can get a new pair to call my own.

And yeah, I understand I-70 is a real mess when it's nasty. The train would be worth the money.

Kevin ---

Good news. The ski train is still running. Winter season starts on 27 December. Most people take it on day trips up to the Winter Park/Mary Jane Resort. Rio Grande Western train leaves Denver at 7:15am and departs Winter Park for the return to Denver at 4:15pm. Coach and club cars. Reserved seating. Price isn't too bad, and the trip over the Continental Divide is said to be ultra scenic. 69th straight year of operation, so it must be a money-maker for the railroad. You can Google "Colorado Ski Train" and get a very good website for details.

I haven't actually been on that train, but I have been in the high Rockies. Magnificent place. Most ski buffs seem to take the train for day trips, but I suppose you can also make a weekend or longer of it at Winter Park. Sure must beat driving I-70 in the unpredictable Colorado winters.

Dan,

"coronal mass ejections"

I am sure glad we lost our PG rating long ago because what you said is just plain nasty!

On the subject of 2012 Doomsday, that news clip is suspicious to say the least. I would have liked to have known what the Dutch were going to do about it. Don't believe for one minute that they got rid of ALL their 'shrooms! That's what was censored.

Wish I knew about the coat deal. I just got thru giving a couple to charity which, I'm sure, went to the newest batch of illegal julios. Being a red-blooded American, you should have got first dibs. If you are that straped for cash, don't shave for 5 days, wear a T-shirt with "Jesus Lives" (that's gee-sus...not hey-zeus) and wrapping your arms around your chest, teeth chattering always helps, and walk into the local Salvation Army mission. You'll get a coat, a scarf, maybe a watch cap, free meal and a cot. It will only cost you a little help around the kitchen. What a deal! Hey, I even try to watch out for you Yankees.

Oh, el jefe, I know it all must seem such a conceit to you. But you're dead on about it not being stylish enough for work. Not to mention that the hazing there began on the first day. But that's my concern, not yours. I'm the one who left it there, not you.

Joe, I've got the black gloves and wing tips; hell, I've even got the black cane with the white point, it's the damned wool coat I'm missing.

Oh he's one of them fancy guys, ok I see.

Hey Kevin, if there is a Burlington Coat Factory you can go to the hat section and they still sell those classic 1940s versions like Tom Landry used to wear. It will go nicely with your black leather gloves, wool coat and wing tips. You'll look just like Clark Gable.

Don't they have a Burlington Coat Factory anywhere nearby? Go in there with even just lunch money and I guarantee you will come out with a nice warm winter coat.

It might be pink, or have tassles or racing stripes, depending on what your lunch investment was going to be, but it's better than walking around Denver in a windbreaker in December!

Woof,
No jacket yet, though he says he sent it. My bad for leaving it behind, though. I've heard of the "ski train" but know very little about it or whether it's worth taking. What do you know?

I'm a bit broke for a while what with the move and the month and a half without a paycheck. But I hear I've not to fear, the ski season is long.

And Lovisa, do you not know sarcasm when you read it? Honestly, even when I try to joke with you it is a miserable failure.

Trivia tidbit on mini ice age, if not for this cooling period we would not have BEER and Scotch:

ACT-

maybe, maybe not..

Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth's magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms.
.
.
The leaks are defying many of scientists' previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth's magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.
It is expected to peak around 2012, bringing lots of sunspots, flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
