An interesting story on the Somali pirates and something which surprised me very much.

It seems that Dutch naval commandos came to the rescue of a tanker under assault in the Gulf of Aden. The commandos followed the pirate's attack boat and were led to a so-called pirate "mother ship." That "mother ship" had been captured some time earlier by pirates; and the Yemeni crew was being held hostage, even forced to help the pirates attack other ships.

The commandos captured the pirates, seized their weapons, and freed the hostages. They then let the pirates go free. It seems that the Dutch are part of a NATO anti-piracy operation and that, according to them, NATO has no "detainment policy." The only way the Dutch could have detained those pirates is if the pirates were Dutch themselves.

Catch and release. One Hell of a stupid way to fight piracy. Wonder how long before the same NATO policy is applied to terrorists? Oh, I forgot, we are already doing that with regard to Gitmo, aren't we?

ACT, let’s clear something up here; I don’t hate anyone because of their party recognition, I just call people out when they constantly criticize but forget to praise when it’s well deserved, party affiliation or not

However, it does call them out as one way thinkers, which was another point I tried to make.

This is the first time I have been proud to be an American under this administration! When it comes to the military, never had a problem being proud at ANYTIME.

Jacob, you don't recognize by-the-way. He hates you because you are not Dem. You didn't understand that he was doing a dig on ol' Bush. His sarcasm is his calling card.

Dan,

"Providing military escorts was a necessity."

because of submarines! Somali pirates use-what-zodiacs? Johnny Walker Red with a rag stuffed in it would take that thing out. AND it would also keep you from becoming arrogant.

"What do you “old timers” think about convoys escorted by military ships?
They were used during WWII?"

Lovisa, Different time, different problem. During WWII, many merchant vessels were pressed into server to ferry troops and supplies into war zones. Providing military escorts was a necessity.

You have really got to appreciate the skills of those SEAL snipers. As I understand it, they were posted on the fantail of the destroyer under orders to shoot only if it appeared that Captain Phillips was in imminent danger of death. Tough, tough spot. The destroyer and the small boat are constantly moving in the waves and current. No shooting range practice this!! The SEAL CO called it. One of the four pirates was aboard the destroyer negotiating. Three with auto weapons still in the boat, which was under tow by the destroyer toward the Somali coast. Not sure now whether Phillips actually jumped overboard again or just went to the side of the small boat to urinate over the side. Either way, he separated himself from the targets just enough. Three pirates popped their heads and shoulders above the gunnel of the small boat. Bingo!! Three simultaneous kill shots.

I am thoroughly impressed. No matter what else is happening in this country, our military guys have still got what it takes.

"You won’t see headlines, “Pirates not afraid of Americans” again."
Yes we will. Every time we run head long into the barbarians we get the chest thumping and the threats. Quadafi had his line of death in the gulf of sidra. Saddam had his mother of all battles, Bin Hiding (in a cave) called us a paper tiger. This is due to the likes of idiots who call for 21st century solutions to 14th century problems.

Savages do not understand restraint and think it is always appeasement. This is a fact of life. The Romans, (4th Century BC to 14th AD) understood that if you want peace, prepare for war (Seneca).

The captain was incredibly smart and brave, saving his whole crew, and risking his own life selflessly. No doubt, the captain represents the very best and highest American ideal.

by the way,
I was proud when we booted the taliban out of power.
I was proud when we toppled Saddam from power.
I was proud when we crushed the guerillas in Iraq after the surge.

Sorry to see you so sad ... till now.

BTW, the Captain not Obama made it happen. Obama did the right thing. He did not get in the way. That is what a good commander does.

What do you "old timers" think about convoys escorted by military ships?
They were used during WWII? Could it work now?

Guess there'd be a problem since the ships in the area in question sail under various flags. It would take a lot of cooperation and coordination. Nah, it probably wouldn't work.

Yes, the President did the right thing. Credibility has been established. Now to Step Two: Figuring out a way to keep the President, our mariners, and our navy from being placed in the same delicate and difficult situation again. The establishment of credibility gives us an opportunity to lead the way on this. Let's take it without equivocation of any kind.

Actually, I think Obama was right to remain silent on this until now.

You won't see headlines, "Pirates not afraid of Americans" again.

The only thing I question, is some press accounts say Obama was approached twice by the military to be able to use force if the captain's life was in danger, and Obama did not give permission at first. He wanted to "talk" to them to try to work it out before he gave the permission, supposedly.

I think Obama should have given permission immediately, but it worked out. In the end, we got an excellent result. We looked reasonable and not weak, so I am very proud of our government, out Navy Seals, and the captain.
