The soccer team Manchester United has accepted a world record transfer offer of over $130 million from Real Madrid for player Cristiano Ronaldo.
In related news, our local Optimist Club has offered me $300,000 for an unopened, shrink-wrapped copy of Windows 3.0, in the special “Deluxe” box containing a manual and complete instruction kit for migrating from DOS. I am mulling the offer.

Who watches soccer ? Oh, I forgot given the projected demographics, it will be Americas #1 sport.

Admittedly I am not a soccer person, but I know soccer fans and they are hardcore. 130 million for any sport is obscene, but perhaps Obama can appoint a Sports-pay Czar and we can all rest comfortably.
Soccer will never be number one in the US, they don’t score enough. IMO it is boring to watch and the European fans are CRAZY.
I think appreciating soccer depends on how much you are drinking or how much mescaline you are taking and I just can’t drink or eat peyote like that anymore.

Soccer is a BEATUTIFUL game. The players are moving all the time. They don’t stand around rearranging certain body parts or spit like baseball players do.
American football is a misnomer. The only time a player’s foot touches the ball is after it (the ball) has carefully been perched atop a thing-a-ma-jig used by golf players. Not so in rugby.
Aside from being a beautiful game, it is played during a reasonable time set: 2 x 45 minutes with a possible short overtime. No 3, 4, or 5 hour games.
Also, most soccer players have gorgeous bods!
Sorry, it’s not a beatutiful game. It is BEAUTIFUL. Guess the thought of those bods made me do it.

it can be a beautiful game, when played well, (but, the “bods” don’t really do much for me.) Nor do I limit this to the men, I do watch Women’s soccer, but their bods aren’t really a part of the appeal, either.
(Unfortunately, most of the US Women’s team is a bunch of track stars with no real skill – that’s why Brazil destroyed them, and will probably do so from now until the end of time – but that’s a discussion for another day.)
While it can be elegant to watch, one problem with soccer is that it’s really the least “fair” sport there is – how often do you see one side crushing an opponent for 89 minutes, but never score, and then be beaten on a fluke going the other way. And if someone goes down 2-0, game over – it’s bunker time. And the last two World Cups have shown soccer at its worst — it looked like fishing boats unloading at the docks, with all the flopping and flapping that was going on, and all the histrionics when a call was made (or not) looked like bad theatre. And despite the “beauty”, sometimes, the only goals that are scored are set-pieces, with nothing in the run of play. And far too many games decided by the referees, with a free-kick or PK call. It’s telling that in most soccer commercials, the most interesting things they find to show aren’t soccer games at all, but people playing futsal, or free-styling with the ball, rarely anything from a game.
Nothing “beautiful” about any of that.
Don’t get me wrong, I watch 2 to 3 matches a week, and all of the CONCACAF qualifiers.
But professional basketball probably has more “beauty”, more athleticism in 1 minute than the 90 minutes of a soccer match.
And soccer players are amongst the most prolific spitters on the planet.
And Ronaldo is a greasy-headed, prima dona cry-baby …
For Christs sakes its soccer. It is like watching grass grow. let’s go watch people run and run and run and maybe score 2 goals after an hour of running.
Most of the players don’t speak english.
There are no cheerleaders.
There is little or no scoring
The uniforms consist of silk pants and jerseys that make bowling shirts look good.
Europeans love the game, that alone should tell you something.
How does a soccer team get a billion dollars in the hole? I’m telling you guys, we need to start curling (not the drinking kind) before it becomes popular. Those sliding thingies (my wife’s term) and brooms can’t cost that much. In a couple years when it catches on with the yuppies and guppies, we could each be worth 10 million bucks to someone. Hell, practice is at the bar. Life just doesn’t get any better or more promising than this.
I’m up for the Sterling Curling League….. I thought Dan was going to water down his drive way this winter as a start?
Oh well, we have 4-5 months to plan the league before more conducive weather arrives, let’s get this party started!
Squiddy said that soccer was a game where one team could dominate the other for X number of minutes, never score, and then wind up losing the match on a fluke play. For a minute there I thought he was talking about the Redskins.

My driveway is pitched so I don’t know how well that would work. If Act’s theory is correct, we only have until Dec 2012 until the equatorial areas will be the mecca of winter sports.
Maybe we should all get together, apply for some stimulus money, buy the Galapagos Islands from Ecuador, and build a curling complex.

You got to learn to curl small amounts of weight (12 ouncers) and build them biceps before you can curl the big stone (not you Stoner-the other stone).
