Not prosecuting only means it’s not worth the time and money to do so.

Have a few questions for you,

A) Why did gates not call his security company before breaking in, if he had one?

B) Why not go ask the neighbor to use phone if he did not have a cell phone. And explain the situation.

C) Most logical, why did Gates not call police and tell them the situation before doing his stupid stunt.

D) Why are you blaming law enforcement, they were only doing their job.

Put blame where it counts, on Gates. Yep Mr. Professor should handled that situation in an intelligent manner not an emotional one.

Zimzo, if it is true that you consulted family and friends who are police officers, I’ll bet dollars to donuts they told you (or should have told you) that no situation involving a public disturbance is the same; and, therefore, the response cannot always be the same. The proverbial “book” only goes so far.

I’ll also bet that the “family” and “friends” you cite would not cotton to having the likes of a civilian such as you second guessing from a distance their every move in the field. There are official administrative and legal entities, as well as sanctioned citizen review panels, which have that duty.

I have seen a street disturbance in which a female police officer stopped it cold simply by a hard stare and a no-nonsense crook of her finger at the disputants. The situation was ended immediately without arrests.

Not a few blocks from my current location, the police received a call this past week about a public disturbance. When the responding deputy made the usual “peace officer” effort to prevent any violence and end the dispute, he suddenly came under attack himself. The individual involved was tasered and arrested. This individual did what all police officers try first of all to avoid have happen: an escalation of the anger to a point where someone tries to assault someone else, even the officer.

That female police officer was successful in her endeavors because of one thing: the disputants recognized that, if they did not obey her order to calm down and stop the confrontation, she had the power to arrest them for, at the least, creating a public disturbance. In the second case of the tasering, the man approached by the deputy seems to have acted like a mindless, uncomprehending idiot. He let his anger get the better of common sense — which, I suspect, is exactly what happened with Gates in the Cambridge case.

No, I was not present in Cambridge, although I have read just about everything out there on the case. Given the politics of that place, the experience of the responding officer, and this officer’s well known responsibility for teaching other officers how to handle inter-racial situations, I would hazard that, for a long while into this incident, Sgt. Crowley had no intention of making an arrest — certainly not one motivated by personal racial feelings. Gates appears to have forced the issue through his refusal to respond with courtesy, to go through the simple and commonly accepted act of identifying himself as the owner of the property, and his loud and personalized verbal abuse of the officer, both inside the house and out in public on the front porch. Gates, in effect, transferred his own long-standing racial complaints and feelings onto an officer whom he did not know and, therefore, could not honestly accuse of racism. In short, Gates foolishly “lost it.” The officer ended the public disturbance by arresting the individual creating the disturbance and refusing to stop.

That the Cambridge prosecutor opted to drop the case is immaterial. This happens all the time —- for reasons of time, resources, and sometimes even politics. Guess which one I choose in this particular case. I happen to view this as a smart decision and an effort to defuse the over-all situation. I also suspect — emphasis on “suspect” — that Sgt. Crowley agreed with it. He had done his job to put an end to the disturbance. No prosecution. Case closed — except for the fact that Gates continued to lose it, making a mountain out of the molehill he himself had first created through his own misbehavior toward the officer.

So, let’s stop with this malarkey about the police officer having made the wrong move. He did what he had to do to end the situation. If you try to force police officers into a position of waiting too long to end such disturbances, you will see the violence in these cases escalate for sure. Some day, perhaps, the disurbance could take place at your house or office. Do you want to wait until the individual creating the disturbance crosses the line into assault or worse before the officer steps in to end it? Could be you who is on the wrong end of the assault. And then you would probably be the first to complain that the responding officer did not act quickly enough to put an end to the situation.

Yes, police officers do stick together and back each other up. They have to. People like you sure don’t do it. Which is very, very strange, since your very life depends on these guys.

No matter where you go there are always “raceist”in every shape and color. Even with the copnstitution saying “That All Men Are Created Equal. There has to be changes on all sides of color: to get rid of the bigotry that keeps rising it’s little head from people educated, not educated, Minisrty and heads of flock or even the president of the US.
