Thanksgiving
By Ralph Waldo Emerson

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

    Here’s one for G:

    Turkey is good,
    beer is great,
    on Cowboys vs Raiders,
    I take Oakland by 8

(Sorry Joe, but happy turkey day!)

Speaking of football, the games sure were turkeys today..

Unless of course you are a Denver, Green Bay or Dallas fan..

Deion Sanders issued an apology to the viewers on behalf of the NFL Network for “all the crap you just watched.” Pretty funny.

Better games today, Auburn and Alabama, Pitt and WV.

Maybe we should hand Thanksgiving football over to NCAA. The Lions are rarely if ever competitive, and Dallas always seems to schedule a team on par with Thomas Aquinas Junior College..

That is not entirely true, Dan, there have been some very good T-Day games. However I am as disappointed as you when it’s an opponent like Oakland.

But I don’t think it’s quite like college where Dallas gets to pick its opponents.

There aren’t any college games this weekend that interest me; next week’s Florida vs Alabama is the next one on my radar.

Well now, Joe, that Middle Tennessee State vs Lousiana-Monroe game seems to be promising. If you don’t go there, how about that huge matchup between Montana and South Dakota State?

O.K. So Joe has become picky. Tell you one thing. He is locked in completely now on one deal here. Come December, he had better be throwing a big wine and cheese party for the Army-Navy game…and cheering rabidly for Navy, if he knows what is good for him!

Holy Cow!! Fourth Quarter: Montana 61 South Dakota State 48. Montana has scored 34 points in the 4th quarter! In other news: Florida trouncing Florida State. Probably the swan song for Bobbie Bowden. And Oklahoma shut out Oklahoma State. Mighty strange year on the college gridiron. Roll Crimson Tide!!!

Dan, yeah I guess you are right.

Wolv, I ended up shopping and putting up Christmas lights so did not have a chance to delve into the farther reaches of what was on today. But yes, I will be rooting for Navy.

Any comments or thoughts? NO Christmas displays in Leesberg Court House/ Loudoun County

Nativity, Other Displays Prohibited On Courthouse Grounds

A new policy set into motion by the Facilities and Grounds Committee of the Loudoun County Courthouse now prohibits displays on the courthouse grounds. This means no more Christmas trees, nativity scenes or any other holiday displays, something that has left some local residents in despair.

I don’t know what to think about that one, Marjorie.

In some ways the County is bleeding-edge on policy, so maybe they are stepping into line with other places that have sterilized their public face.

On the other hand, Loudoun reveres it’s traditions, and as long as the public displays don’t exclude or slur anyone’s beliefs, what is the harm in using public places for public expression?

Lots of people way overinterpret the establishment clause, and who knows, maybe the atheists pointed out that ANY display is counter to their opinion.

    November 29th, 2009 @ 10:30 pm

The establishment clause has nothing to do with Loudoun County. Simply put, this is simply some exercising censorship over others..

  15. Barbara Munsey
    November 29th, 2009 @ 10:53 pm

Dans, it seems the standard censor’s interpretation of the clause is that ANY expression on public property, even an inclusive display, is a violation.

I agree that allowing one set of beliefs of “freedom from” to trump everyone else’s “freedom to” is censorship, if the “freedom to” is not placing any burden on others than to have to look at it if their eyes are pointed that way. Is there something hateful about a tree or a menorah that is unfit for public display?

Perhaps those who think any display infringes on their freedom from could regard it as a public exercise in tolerance, that wonderful public virtue?

Another sign of the times, don’t insult anyone who isn’t Christian. Little by little They are chipping away any and every hint of Christianity, another foundation that this country was built upon.

Over the past several years, major retailers, etc. (including the white house) ceased using, Merry Christmas and replaced it with, “Happy Holidays.”

Remember, They also want “In God We Trust,” removed from our money and government buildings.

On the hand, many would argue about the separation of church and state even though this country was founded based on freedom of religion. The founders knew that religion could not influence government or vice versa. However, the founders felt that God was an important aspect in each.

I could go on, but the point is that They are erasing and stripping the face of this country as it has been known and replacing it with a obedient generic society that no longer displays outrage or stand up for their rights. Not only are we having our freedoms diminish and our language diluted we are losing our country, culture and way of life.

The question is: who are They, because They are who you need to fear? We are heading for where we would have been already if WWII had not occurred.

My books are packed away, so I can’t reference this as I would like.

Dennis Prager wrote a chapter once where he displayed his feelings about Christmas and being Jewish, I believe the book was titled, “Think a Second Time.”

It was a very moving piece about how his father used to take the family to all of the Christmas displays and point out the beauty and differences in Christianity and Judaism.

He wrote about how they as a family looked forward and enjoyed the differences in religion and at the same time they grew.

No one wants to enjoy anything anymore.

    Barbara,

There are many who should actually read Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists to understand the complete message, not just snippets to support a particular political position.

Seems as though LoCo is promoting the establishment of secularism with this decision. Also seems to be just one more case where the Democrats site the Constitution only when it suits their agenda.

    HE,

There are many non-Christians that celebrate the Christmas holiday. How to put Christmas back in the store, simple, let the retailers know that you have Christmas dollars to spend, not holiday dollars. If you want my Christmas dollars, you better offer me Christmas merchandise, not holiday merchandise.

Dans, I firmly believe the government is in violation of the establishment clause at every level, because we DO have a state religion: Environmentalism.

When, oh when will someone bring suit here and get the same result as the British High Court?

    All I want for Christmas is . . .

Sooooo, if the County can’t host displays of beliefs that defy scientific explanation and are backed only by faith, does that mean they have to get rid of all the “stop man-made global warming” stuff in the Government Center lobby?

    Joe,

Btw, it was quite amusing that second tier SEC teams spanked the ACC division champs.

I too will be catching some serious couch time during the SEC championship. Should be a heck of a game.

Fox 5 coverage of Citizens committee decision, Ken Reid and Eugene interviewed. The BOS will meet this morning to decide if they over ride the committee.

  • Quote of the New Year

Last March, NASA reported the oceans have been cooling for the last five years. Sea level has stopped rising, and Northern Hemisphere cyclone and hurricane activity is at a 24-year low.

Environmental extremists and global warming alarmists are in denial and running for cover. Their rationale for continuing a lost cause is that weather events in the short term are not necessarily related to long-term climatic trends. But these are the same people who screamed at us each year that ordinary weather events such as high temperatures or hurricanes were undeniable evidence of imminent doom.

Now that global warming is over, politicians are finally ready to enact dubious solutions to a non-existent problem. In Britain, Parliament is intrepidly forging ahead with a bold new plan to cool the climate, even as London experienced its first October snowfall since 1934 and Ireland went through the coldest October in the last 70 years.

This is an absurd spectacle. Our advanced civilization is being systematically mismanaged by technologically illiterate lawyers responding to political pressures from irrational fanatics. Would someone please tell these people it is impossible to overturn the laws of thermodynamics?
