When I read this, I thought “You have got to be kidding me”. Either this guys is pure stupid, is dangerous beyond belief, or just doesn’t read what his speeches say prior to giving them (which implies incompetent, but we already knew that). The part that is most salient is:
“Like it or not, we have to have a financial system that is healthy and functioning,”
So our president thinks that we might not like having a financial system that is healthy and functioning. The connotation of the phrase “like it or not” is that even though the thing being spoken of is negative, wrong or evil, it is necessary. So our president believes a healthy and functioning financial system is not a good thing. 2012 can’t come quickly enough.
Obama supporters, are you embarrassed by him yet? I’m beyond embarrassed at this point, and I didn’t even vote for him (though he is an embarrassment to every American). I’d suggest he ought to resign, but that would put the worst succession of power chain up that anyone could imagine (Biden … yuck, Palosi … even worse). At least Obama is incapable of getting things done … the damage will be limited while he is in office.
Get real. These people are not embarrassed by BARNEY FRANK, and you think 0bama will embarrass them?
At some point even a blazing liberal has to become embarrassed by blatant incompetence. I have to believe that they are not going to bury their collective heads in the sand forever. They might have a different perspective on a lot of things, but even they have to have a tolerance level for stupidity in their own.
Brian,
Only one way I can think to sum it up, ignorance never embarrasses ignorance…
Brian, you are either dishonest or you lack the ability to think critically.
It’s pretty clear that “like it or not” was in reference to the issue of taxes on banks, despite the author’s petty attempts to incite.
The author of the editorial should either clarify or include the quote in context (unless “Editorial” is the word being used here for dishonest opinion) and you should start using your noggin and notice poor form in writing a “logic” piece.
kevin,
you are getting mighty zimzo-esque in your critiques. why so pissed?
Maybe because the object of his man crush is dropping like a rock :
Obama Hits Lowest Approval Mark
Independent voters see Pres. Obama in a negative light by a nearly 2-1 margin, according to a new Marist College survey, while almost half of voters say he has failed to meet their expectations.
http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/02/obama_hits_lowe.php
Um, Kevin, given the quote below, it’s equally clear that your characterization of this being about “taxes on banks” is wrong as well. Given the nasty tone of your rejoinder, and in the interests of intellectual honesty, will you now admit you were wrong?
“So the point I’m making — and Blanche is exactly right — we’ve got to be non-ideological about our approach to these things. We’ve got to make sure that our party understands that, like it or not, we have to have a financial system that is healthy and functioning, so we can’t be demonizing every bank out there. We’ve got to be the party of business, small business and large business, because they produce jobs. We’ve got to be in favor of competition and exports and trade. We don’t want to be looking backwards. We can’t just go back to the New Deal and try to grab all the same policies of the 1930s and think somehow they’d work in the 21st century.”
Not that what he said was particularly awful – in fact, an article in the Huffington Post was pretty, well, “huffy” over his besmirching the sacred cow of the New Deal in the above. His “like it or not” was more a criticism of his some in his party – itself remarkably two-faced, considering all the hay he’s tried to make over evil banks and corporations …
jacob,
“Either this guys is pure stupid, is dangerous beyond belief, or just doesn’t read what his speeches say prior to giving them (which implies incompetent, but we already knew that).”
I thought my tone was rather tepid in comparison? I may have said he potentially lacked critical thinking skills but I held back from calling him “pure stupid”
squiddy,
Really? I thought it was about how Bobama “believes a healthy and functioning financial system is not a good thing”!
Lame.
Thanks for providing the quote. I actually had no idea what the whole quote was, but somehow “I hate a well functioning economy” just didn’t sound right.
“I thought my tone was rather tepid in comparison?”
Tepid is for bath water and some beers.
I’m not so sure I’d give him as much credit squiddy. The fuller context is an address to his own, but the “like it or not” is still about having a and functional financial system. That there is a broader context does not contradict the thought …
So while it is possible he could be condescending to members of his party (at best) he has in mind the idea that it is not necessarily a good thing to have a healthy financial system.
o my goodness, you are so crazy
Kevin,
So two ’stupids’ make a smart, or is it two ‘over-the-tops’ makes a reasoned? Your panties are in a twist dude. You are the one who told me to snap out of it on more than one occasion. I am just returning the favor. Have a beer. Count to ten, then cogitate.
Brian, there is definitely something disturbing in the reflexive “Like it or not”, and it continues a pattern of statements and actions that indicate a deep-seated loathing of business and finance (banks.) I wouldn’t indict him on this single verbal slip, but when added to the pile, it’s pretty obvious who this guy is.
I’m not a fan of electing Presidents who’ve never served in the military, and I realize now I’m not a fan of people who’ve *never* had to earn a living through profitable enterprise.
Unfortunately, too many people these days don’t understand capitalism and the profit motive. They think their jobs and their wages are somehow a “right.” They don’t see that if their labors aren’t worth what the company pays them, they are expendable. And they’re always so surprised when their company slips beneath the waves – it’s not *their* fault, must be those greedy CEO’s.
The President is one of those – he’s always been employed through the largess of others, (like taxpayers), he’s never really had to earn his keep, and he’s never knowingly had to produce a profit through his labors.
People used to say of him “He’s never even run a candy store” – that’s right, because he thinks candy should be produced by appropriating money from the rich, paying government workers to make the candy, and then be distributed by the government. And when a candy bar costs $14, the government will subsidize the cost for those that can’t afford them.
Like this is news … http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20100121/pl_bloomberg/a8uii1bcrdmy
“Like it or not” is reflexive???
Squiddy, “too many people these days don’t understand capitalism and the profit motive.”
The problem is Squiddy, the Dipshit fully understands the system, that’s what he’s always had a problem with.
The Dipshit wrote in “The Audacity of Hope,” he clearly states that, like his father, he is also no great fan of the American system of free enterprise capitalism; he describes capitalism as “chaotic and unforgiving,” and has a desire to roll back the “ownership society.”
Re: “Reflexive”?
Feel free to suggest a better word, Lovisa. Better yet, feel free to address the substance of what I wrote. Or were you just trying to be irritating?
Most people can say the phrase “we need a healthy financial system” without adding the prefix “like it or not” – to most, that’s like saying “Like it or not, we need oxygen to breathe” – it’s a fact, and needs no qualifier or acknowledgment that it’s a bad thing.
On the bright side, his phrasing suggests that, despite his inner convictions and beliefs, he understands that a healthy financial system is necessary, no matter how personally distasteful he finds “the financial system.” At least until he can find another way.
In other words, in this instance, his intellect won at least a partial, if temporary victory over his personal biases – something, Lovie, I doubt you have much experience with.
So I take it from these comments that you all current LIKE everything about our current banking and financial system.
Why don’t you read it at all, squiddy,et al, that he is saying to the dems,
“like it or not, what you’re asking for isn’t going to fix the problem. What we need is to do what’s necessary to have a functioning healthy economy, not your half-brained ideas of how to get there (aka demonizing every bank out there)”
This thread is lame. A funny post, so clearly askew it’s not worth wasting the time I’m wasting to sit here and type these words. I’m having a Nietzsche/Kafka moment. That is the effect of your post, Brian Withnell!!!
Unfortunately, Kevin, he didn’t say all that – how could he, when he’s the *author* of those half-brained (sic) ideas?
Personally, Kevin, I’m having more of a Bart Simpson moment; I just feel the need to annoy someone – this snow is starting to grate on my last nerves …
I need a cigarette. Or a shot. Someone wake me when the grass is back…
The Nietzsche-Kafka Radio Network continues with poetry for a snowy, February evening:
“Open here I flung the shutter, when, with
many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the
Saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a
minute stopped or stayed he,
But with mien of lord or lady, perched
above my chamber door —
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above
my chamber door —
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.”

“Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy
into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the
countenance it wore.
‘Though they crest be shorn and shaven, thou’
I said, ‘art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering
from the Nightly shore —
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the
Night’s Plutonian shore!’
Quoth the Raven, ‘NEVERMORE!’
That’s good stuff, woof, no joke.
I want the Teleprompter cuff link and tie clasp set!
Yes, very good stuff, Wolve.
Kevin,
Your “restatement” of Obama’s words do not reflect the meaning of what he said. Especially within the context of prior philosophy stated.
My point is that the sum total of what Obama states and does is so beyond what ought to be expected of a president … Obama doesn’t even reach up to the level of G.W. Bush, and he is about the worst in recent history (I’ll give you Nixon was at least caught at more crooked activity). But he is an embarrassment to the country. Taken as individual blunders, he would be no worse than Bush’s mistakes in words, but the problem is that not only does he have such blunders, but he actually believes things such as this.
Joe, does the Teleprompter cuff link and tie clasp set have a little head that bobbles back and forth while never pausing or stopping in the middle?
I wonder if the Queen fainted after the thought of receiving a CD each month of the Dipshit’s speeches.
I disagree BN. Your point is either disingenuous or confused.
Kevin,
OK. I’ll bite, why confused or disingenuous? Please tell us. Enlightenment is a good thing. Bring the lamp into our darkness.
Wolv, May I share your post? Many people I know would appreciate it.
Can anyone see across the street? This is a real blizzard – crazy blowing snow – crap!
Cathymac, I can see across the street most of the time–we are having lots of changeable gusts it seems.
Last night I cooked almost as much as I’ve been shovelling. Thog bring much meat for second blizzard!
Much coffee too.
Good Thog!
Heaven’s, Brian. Actually taking 0bama’s words to mean what he says? Obviously Kevin is correct. You ARE confused.
The dog just went out and had to plow through the snow that was chest high for him. I can’t imagine what Joe’s dog is experiencing.
My husband cleaned off the front porch and it already drifted again! We aren’t shoveling till the wind dies down.
Barb, French toast this morning, chili dogs for dinner. I am so tired of cooking! I will see if I can muster up the energy for chopping for stew tomorrow morning.
Our dog is being strictly chaparoned at all times during this storm. This is no weather for an animal that’s ankle high.
We have a decent food selection, and generator and kerosene heater at the ready. As long as the roof holds up we will be ok …
Saw a herd of at least six deer across the creek in my backyard. Snow up to their bellies. And, man, it’s blowing!
Cathymac – There was a time when women made sandwiches for kids and husband AND cooked dinner every day. Of course, there had to be cookies available at all times. You’re tired of cooking already?
Very scary dog story at LTM:
http://loudountimes.com/news/2010/feb/10/blizzard-warning/
I’m hoping that little beagle charged off and made a new friend, and is sitting high and dry in somebody’s house. Excellent that they have a link if someone knows where poor Squirt is.
I keep sweeping both front and back, and the dog is sticking to his paths–those snowshoe feet keep him mostly on top of the stuff with that base underneath the current load.
Cmac, yesterday I cooked: two family packs of chicken (one drums, one thighs), two pans of burgers, and one pork roast.
That, plus soup are all ready to rock and roll in the fridge.
Kids have been their own Ramen machines this morning. Yesterday was egg frenzy, day before pancakes. Tomorrow, probably back to pancakes.
Thog also visited Blockbuster and hit the four for twenty table, so we are re-movied.
I have a pile of mending for when it’s my turn to pick this afternoon–Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
We didn’t see it in theater (wish I could’ve, but never got around to it) because my daughter was part of the boycott crowd. Apparently it was ready for a fall release the year before they DID release it, and the company took a look at what it would be competing with, then decided to hold it for summer to maximize profit.
The whole MuggleNet bunch lit up in protest, and declared they wouldn’t see it in the theatre to pay them back for dissing the hardcore fan base, so when vacation rolled around and it was EVERYWHERE, the rainy day my husband offered a movie outing she turned up her nose at it, so we did something different.
It’s mine now, but I will miss that big screen feeling!
Whaaaa, whiny me! lol
Lovisa, every school/workday is pancakes before sunup for me.
The dog helps me out by eating the test pancake each day, with a drop of syrup!
Boy did this thread get high-jacked!
jacob my points are already stated. The quote, as brian and the editor used it, is blatantly, and without apology, taken out of context. Brian would argue that the context of the speech should be narrowed (practically to that single line) and then and then have that line generalized over the course of all speeches given by BO. No critically thinking person would do that.
What’s more, I’m peculiarly drawn to this obvious incongruity between reality and what Brian is saying like a helpless moth to a flame,so I’ll give him his much due points for inanity.
This article can probably shed some light therein:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527451.400-the-comedy-circuit-when-your-brain-gets-the-joke.html
Lovisa, I can bring home the bacon AND fry it up in a pan – BUT – cooking duties are usually shared in the Mac household. When Mr. Mac is at work and I am at home during snow storms with kids 24/7 – and I am responsible for every meal – yes, I do get cranky. Mr. Mac is off today so that helps.
Barb, I was po’d too when they changed the release date for the last HP movie, it was a recurring Fall treat for us. We saw it with the kids in the theater the following summer, but we usually buy the movie because it has additional scenes. GREAT snow movie.
The wind is dying down and I see people emerging to survey the damage, soon it will be shovel time.
No Kevin,
I am not taking it out of context, but looking at the context of the entire speech and what his statements on economics have been in every place he has spoken on the issue.
You on the other hand are insisting on an overly gracious interpretation that ignores the plain meaning of what he said, the plain connotation of the words he used, and the consistent disdain for private property, personal wealth, and capitalism in general. If someone looks at the full scope of his statements (even including during his campaign) the implications for taking this as I have stated, and not as you are deflecting the meaning.
It might even be that he will have been told how bad this sounds, and attempt to deflect what he has said. (What do you expect from any politician, Democrat or Republican? When they say something stupid, they back off and try to convince people “that isn’t what I meant … what I was *really* saying is ….”)
Truth be told, these guys are no more intelligent than the average guy on the street, and they have a lot less common sense.
Cmac, Thog has been home teleworking–we all tiptoe between 3 and 6, for the telemeeting on speaker phone!
(Sorry Brian!)
lol
Sorry for the hijacking, Barb and I seem to chit chat!
inanity
“Like It Or Not,” seems appropriate:
Obama’s auntie still freeloading
“admits she illegally overstayed her visa. Instead of obeying the law, she went to a judge in 2003 with a bogus request for asylum. She was turned down. She ignored the deportation order and instead filed an appeal. She was told again: It’s illegal for you to stay.
She’s still here.
Aunt Zeituni donated $260 to her nephew’s campaign for president – which is also against the law because she’s not a U.S. citizen
She is shamelessly – and happily – living in taxpayer-subsidized housing intended for citizens and legal immigrants.”
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view/20100204obamas_auntie_still_freeloading/srvc=home%26position=1
She needs to go home to Kenya immediately. Her brother who was a co-owner of a grocery store in the Boston area is also here illegally, he disappeared after she was arrested, I believe that he is still here somewhere, Illegally.
CMac — Feel free.
Brian — You know full well that we in this crowd are not much above a pack of Somali pirates, especially when we have cabin fever!
Even I’m getting cabin fever. I’ve been out shoveling more than any 53-year-old ought (shoveled out my own, helped with the neighbor’s, did the fire hydrant, helped at the church, and more … this has been crazy).
Just got to love Kevin though … he gets it wrong, and claims anyone that differs from him isn’t thinking critically (true Scotsman logic error), claims anyone is insane if they persist in calling him on it. Tragic. His world view is blinding him to what is real, and he doesn’t even know it.
Like It Or Not – The Che iPhone App
“These hyenas (Americans) are fit only for extermination. We must keep our hatred alive and fan it to paroxysm! The victory of Socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims!” (thus spake the icon of flower-children)”
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/02/the_che_iphone_app.html
I don’t own one thankfully. There extremely insulting quotes in the article, the quote about the mexican’s is comical.
