Actually, Reb, that drone capability for reading texts isn't really needed. All you have to do is join Face Book or Twitter and the suckers will tell you everything you could ever want, not excluding the size of their undies, the last time they ovulated, and whether or not sonny boy may be a closet homosexual. Reminds me of the "intelligence service" for old Marse Robert. They got all the Union military secrets they needed by reading the Yankee papers, obligingly passed over by the Yankee pickets.

Being the drone man that you are, it appears that the military can now fly drone surveilance in the US with no oversight but by the Pentagon. Talk about invasion of privay! You are being watched and we must stop this before it gets off the ground.

Holy Cow!! Now they are proposing street lights with talking surveillance cameras. Accidentally drop a gum wrapper on the street, and the camera will tell you to pick it up or get your ass out of there. Next thing you know, we'll get robots which can perp walk you in cuffs to the nearest police station. Save a lot of money on police salaries and benefits. And I hear those drones are getting so good that they may be able to read the text right off your IPod. Makes the old days in East Berlin seem kind of benign.

And then there is that little black box (Event Data Recorder) installed in many of our vehicles under the aegis of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), ostensibly to collect better data on vehicle speed and safety at the time of an accident. If you don't have one now, you soon will. They are becoming mandatory. By law you cannot remove or disable them.

One of my vehicles is an older model. I never even realized that it had one of those hidden boxes until just recently. Made me pause. A long time ago, I was trained to use the technology available at the time to track moving vehicles. Often a game of chance then. But this little sucker...I can see all sorts of possibilities for improvement from a much more sinister aspect than just the NTSB goals of vehicle speed and safety. Ha! Remember the guy in "1984" who had to find a little nook in his apartment to get out of sight of his "official" two-way televison screen?
