So why does it not say ..pledge allegiance to the federal government of the united states of America?

The pledge states quite clearly that the flag stands for the Republic. The federal government is the collection of states — that’s what the word FEDERAL means.

We are NOT saying that “the pledge doesn’t honor the government of which Obama is the iconic leader.” Honoring the government does not mean one must honor those who hold positions in that government. What it means is that we obey the laws, even when we thing the laws are stupid; and when we think the laws are stupid, we work within the system to change them.

If the flag is the symbol for the republic why pledge allegiance to both the flag and the republic? Clearly the pledge does not consider the two concepts to be the same. The flag as the symbol of the federal government and the republic is the collection of states.

The executive branch is the part of the government that directly impacts citizens: laws without execution are just words on a page.

Next to the fact that the pledge was invented by a socialist and advanced by fascists, the redefinition by republicans that saying the pledge doesn’t honor the government of which Obama is the iconic leader is truly priceless. We should change Virginia law that saying the pledge in schools is required only when the president is republican.

You really are a mess, aren’t you, Special Ed? The FLAG stands for the REPUBLIC, just like it says in the Pledge of Allegiance. Your assertion that our current government supports that Republic (as defined in the Constitution), is woefully lacking in evidence.

It is you who are trying to redefine words. We pledge our allegiance to the FLAG and to the REPUBLIC. Not to individuals.

Furthermore, 0bama does not even lead the U.S. government — neither de facto nor de jure. He leads only one of the three branches of our government. The Supreme Court can order him to turn over documents he does not want released, and the Congress can subpoena him and even throw him out of office.

The President has no legal authority to order any free person to do anything.

In a short statement one wouldn’t have redundant phrases. The pledge is to the flag (the current government) and also to the republic (the form of political organization) which the current government supports (stands for)

You give an oath to the Obama administration each time you say the pledge unless you leave out parts or redefine the words. I’m always glad to see that in spite of policy differences republicans insist on proving that they support Obama by proclaiming allegiance to the federal government under his leadership and that we are all united under one god — Obama. (or maybe the whole pledge thing works only to identify sheep who will say anything to prove they are part of the group.)

Putting a personal face as the symbol of the executive branch of government is evident everywhere…like the name of the governor on signage as you enter a state. The office is always secondary to promoting the current officeholder. This website can’t discuss policy without using Obama name as a surrogate. It is the Obama administration not the 47th presidential administration. But I get the need to be more abstract if you aren’t an Obama fan. Children, however, need a concrete image and a photo helps do that. (and I am just as creeped out by a pledge to a flag as to a picture…both symbols of government.)

Don’t hurt yourself there, Ed, those contortions you go through to try and make a contrary point is worthy of the Cirque du Soleil.

There is no public oath to a specific person extant in this land – there are oaths to the Republic, oaths to support and defend the Constitution, and oaths to obey the lawful commands of the Commander-In-Chief – an office, or a concept, but never a specific person by name. (Excluding marriage vows, I suppose.)

Oaths to specific persons are generally only to people whose titles begin with “Emperor”, “Dictator-For-Life”, and Fuhrer – so you’ll have to forgive the majority of people who find such things creepy, repugnant, and/or scary.

Which is it, BO, the investigation continues or the President has it right? seems to me he’s already tried and convicted who he’s blaming – the “shady ” video guy, and if Al Queda was involved, well, it’s the video guy’s fault. Talk about “Ready, Fire, Aim” – and he speaks with the authority of the President, while Romney is a private citizen – if there’s anyone who should be circumspect, it’s the President. Yet who do *you* want to call out for making premature judgements? Your “evolving” standards for these statements seem to be, predictably, entirely based on who’s speaking, and not on what’s being said.

I’m quite sure that the investigation will continue – until after the election.

If the government were to change the flag would too. In fact it has changed slightly as we changed governments slightly with each new added state.

You can’t pledge allegiance to a land mass. You can only pledge allegiance to a political entity.

I solve this problem by not saying a pledge but I love how you all twist yourself into pledging allegiance to Obama by pretending not to.

Ed, when I was growing up we were told that we were Pledging Allegiance to our country, the government, president, etc. never came into the picture.

Several years ago I posted links to articles where parents were outraged that teachers were having their students Pledge of Allegiance to the Usurpers photo, not the flag.
