GB,
I see left wing hell coming. A partial economic collapse will bring a dictatorship. This dictatorship will not tolerate people living in the country, armed, out from under its thumb. Capitalism will be blamed, not the socialist BS. Currently each family on Welfare is costing us $61,000.00.

This is simply not sustainable. Frankly, such a princely stipend for those in poverty is ridiculous, considering this outpaces the mean income by 50%. Actually, it is immoral, it is outrageous. It should cause rioting in the street by the people paying for this largess. This is paid for by everyone putting money into Social Security, not just the top 52% paying income taxes.

This is not happening, for we have become pussies

@ jacob

One of the underlying reasons for the increase in gun sales is not so much that people are afraid that Obama is going to take away guns, but that the country is on such a downward spiral that they figure that they had better start stocking up right now for when the country falls apart and/or falls into complete tyranny under some other President.

There are just not enough of us to continue to vote for freedom, 2nd amendment rights and rugged individualism in the long term. Therefore freedom lovers are beginning to quietly move to rural areas and stockpiling weapons and cash, gold and silver. They and their wives and kids are also learning how to hunt game, slaughter animals and grow crops. You certainly can't be a wimp (or in your words, a 'pussy') to do those things.

There is a general pessimism even in Hollywood if one looks at the way the future is often portrayed in film and TV shows these days. The future is frequently shown as dystopian with those capable of surviving being those who know how to handle guns and/or other weapons such as crossbows. The wimps die.

NBC's show 'Revolution' even says "If you were smart, you left the city. If you weren't, you died there"

GB,
A good congress, and Senate would be a good thing. I am far from thinking this election is in the bag. The US public was dumb enough to vote for the empty suit once, why not again. 50 years of public school brainwashing has done its job. We are guilty ridden, and ignorant of our own history. We do not understand the founding principles. We equate licentiousness with liberty.

Government is about 'taking care of us.' No it is not. It is about ensuring the domestic tranquility, keeping the invading armies out, and making trade regular. After that, you should look to family and private institutions.

The recluse option may at some point become necessary. If so, I am going to be greatly saddened for we will have lost the Republic irretrievably. Franklin knew this experiment in a representative democratic self governance was something that would require effort to maintain. Thomas Jefferson called out for a revolution every third generation.

@ jacob

A good President is certainly an excellent first step, but having a good Congress may be even more important since they hold the purse strings. How can a Congressional candidate get elected these days promising to essentially send back no pork?

If Romney loses this race, Republicans have a lot of soul searching to do. I suspect that some will fall into depression. Many are going to say that the the only solution for the GOP is to move further to the left so that they can (supposedly) draw more black and Latino votes.

For my part, if Obama wins, I am going to find higher ground in more rural areas, become a recluse and live out the rest of my years like that.

We have no choice but to undo 80 years of socialist progressivism.

Indeed and it starts with education. Far too many people think that the federal government's function is to "take care of" the people like a nanny. Hard work, rugged individualism and entrepreneurial spirit are now euphemisms for "greedy" and "selfish". Many Republicans have even adopted the rhetoric of the left when it comes to federal gov't. Even Paul Ryan talks about saving medicare for future generations rather than weaning those future generations off of it.

If we don’t change our attitude that we must have a welfare state and police the world, having Republicans in control won’t do much good

GB,
The situation in 1980 was no different than today, and it was not till 2008 that the lesson of Carter was unlearned, it was relearned by 2012. The Education system was under the thrall of the left back then, the difference is that people were not wise to them back then. The bloom is off the rose now, people despise the education system in general, and the union in particular.

The immigration situation is a mess, but it may actually get addressed. And despite the efforts of LaRaza, I think the hispanic community is naturally Republican. They are entrepreneurial, hard working, and migrate into churches.

This is not a recipe for progressive domination. It is not going to be easy sailing for conservatives either. The ship is still heading toward the falls, we need to turn it around and tack against the current. We have no choice but to undo 80 years of socialist progressivism.

This made national but not local news:Romney sign burning in Leesburg considered arson

Hank Silverberg, wtop.com

LEESBURG, Va. - It's not unusual for campaign signs to be stolen or even destroyed during the course of a political campaign. But an incident early Monday morning, involving a sign burning, is now being called arson.

Libby Stevens put up her 4-foot-by-8-foot blue and white Mitt Romney sign when the candidate himself came to Leesburg last week. It was on her front lawn, inside her white picket fence. About 2 a.m. Monday someone set the plastic sign on fire.

Stevens says it was scary to look out the window to see flames leaping into the night.

"To come into someone's gated fenced front yard and set something on fire? Something could have happened," she says.

The Loudoun County Fire Department has classified the sign burning as arson, which in this case would be a misdemeanor. If a suspect is convicted he or she could face a year in jail and a big fine.

Stevens' home is on South King Street, or route 15, which is a major commuter route into Leesburg.

Stevens says signs have been stolen from her fence before. She's replaced her smaller signs on the fence three times, even using plastic fasteners to keep them from being stolen again.

Two doors down, her neighbor also has signs up. But they are for President Obama.

Her message to whoever burned the sign: "Shame on you!"

On her lawn now, next to the scorch mark from the fire, and two empty aluminum poles, she has placed a smaller Romney sign and an American flag.

The trick is to prevent a recurrence of the 2006 elections. What happened when Clinton got smashed in the 1994 midterms? He played along with the Republicans and the result was a balanced budget. What happened when Bush lost the House in 2006? He played along with the Demonrats and the deficit increased eight-fold in two years.

The blame was placed on Bush, so we got 0bama. (Of course, why they even nominated such a total zero is beyond me. The field included a 7-term Congressman, a two-term governor, a UN ambassador, an Energy Secretary, and the Chairman of the Democratic Governor's Association -- all in one package. And they nominated 0bama instead.)

So first we need to prevent such midterm debacles as happened in 2006. Failing that, the President needs to veto the shit that the Demonrat-run Congress sends to his desk.

I have a feeling after the fiasco of the past four years, it will be another 30 before the Democrats, who are now openly progressive socialists, will see a victory like 2008

I am not so sure about that. The demographics (especially with legal and illegal immigration) are not on our side. Additionally, the education system is completely under the heel of the left which means that we have little means to educate children properly about the role of gov't and constitutionalism
