Where you are held accountable for your convictions and record

This is the sort of thing that will cause a lot of trouble. We need to be able to trust the vote. A computer program is far too easy to manipulate. Chads, and mechanical devices are harder to tamper with. They are also more expensive. Maybe this is something we want to spend money on.

Update: Bolling considering an Independent Run?

The word spread last evening that Lt Governor Bill Bolling was getting out of the race for the republican nomination for Governor next year. This morning he put out a statement that he is suspending his campaign.

AG Cuccinelli, who now has a clear path to the nomination, has put out the following statement:

“Statement from Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli:

I am honored and proud to have served with the Lieutenant Governor over the last decade, in the State Senate, as running mates for statewide office and as leaders of Virginia State Government.

Throughout this race, I have kept to the premise that Bill and I are allies in governance, even if temporary competitors in politics. Bill Bolling is a good man — a true public servant who has worked hard throughout his career to make Virginia a better place to live and raise our families. I cannot speak highly enough of his service.

I will honor the Lt. Governor’s service by campaigning for Governor as we both pledged to govern when we were sworn in, in 2010. I will continue the challenging work of advancing first principles in Virginia’s policy arena by creating an environment for maximizing job creation, preserving life, liberty and opportunity, and working to make Virginia a beacon of hope and prosperity in these tough economic times.”

As always, AG Cuccinelli is a class act. Lt Gov Bill Bolling’s statement leaves a lot to be desired. This is the second time Bolling has “backed out” of a process, he did so in 2009 and allowed then AG McDonnell a clear path to the nomination. This is getting to be quite a pattern for Bolling.

It probably won’t be Jamie Foxx’s saviour again. Sandra Fluke seems to be the pick. Why not just the condom (oh, right. That ain’t a person unless it is on someones head). Why not the 50.5% of the people who voted to further destroy what is left of this country? Jessie Jackson Jr? Obama-bear-hugging Chris Christie? The UN? Joe “the racist” Biden? I could think of many more deserving liberals to grace the front cover of a long forgotten tabloid. Sandra Fluke? The heroes of today are the envy of public school children across the nation. I think that we are missing a society somewhere.

First they have an Arab Spring that commences into riots in the streets and an over-throw of Mubarak. Then they have what is their version of a democratic election and elect a radical Islamist and the sharia Muslim Brotherhood. President Obama immediately speaks up to welcome our new partners in democracy and how the world is right once more. Alas, the military refuses to give full control to Morsi until some things are straightened out. The people revolt. Morsi gains full control and the people rejoice. Morsi condemns Israel and helps align Egypt with its Arab neighbors Syria and Iran. Morsi helps Hamas get weapons to Gaza. Morsi wants American dollars cause his economy is in the crapper. Hamas attacks Israel. Israel finally retaliates and Hamas plays the victim. SOS Clinton brokers deal for peace with Morsi for money and aid to the Palestinians. Obama is pleased once again and all is right with the world. Morsi, immediately after brokering peace removes power from the courts of Egypt and becomes supreme dictator. Egyptians riot. All is not good with our brethren in Egypt. Obama is silent.

What will happen is a military coup of Morsi and then military rule until someone tells the Egyptian people how democracy works. It will probably be Obama again (I have the strange feeling he helped in the first elections and that is why it looks like it does…..kinda like it looks here in the US) so that all will be right in the world. Except Egypt is NOT or friend or ally, there is no democracy and the Middle East is heating up once again. Some of this is distraction since Iran is still working on that bomb. Obama can only focus on one fire at a time and all the forests seem to be burning simultaneously. Where is Israel in all this? Wishing that they had a friend to cover their back. I’m sure they feel pretty alone in the world right now. And what is Obama’s strategy? Good question. Let me know when you figure it out. Hopefully before Farsi becomes our primary language.

A commenter brought something to mind and it tends to make perfect sense. Maybe it should be time for a change. We have been creating a welfare society over the decades and it appears that our elected officials can “stay the course” at best, or further ecascerbate the problem at worst. You can’t talk poverty all you want. If you don’t pay taxes because you are poor, how do you afford children? Oh, each one is a deduction on a tax form with free schooling, food stamps, Medicade, etc. It would appear the government PAYS you for being poor. And you get to vote. Many of you don’t have a spouse. Maybe it isn’t such a bad idea for free birth control. Regardless, once you are use to the largess, you look for ways to not only continue receiving it but ways to further it with more gimmies. It would appear that without skin in the game, you shouldn’t have a say in the matter. You are living on the dole that 50% of others are paying for and what you are voting for. Is this the liberal definition of fair?

One of my pet peeves for many decades (and this goes way back to Va.’s Blue Laws) has been the arcane laws left on the books for the state and federal governments. This article brought that back into mind. We pay our Congress to go on breaks and vacation with nothing to show for it when it comes to legislation. We have more laws on the books than we need that pertain to the people but not enough laws that control the Congress, which is another battle for another day. I believe that congressional minions continually work while their masters are away. Then why not have those minions examining laws every 5 years or so to see whether they need to be addressed for re-vamping or elimination? Times change, economics change and the lame duck session is a perfect time to address this. It can eliminate laws from the roles that have long since out-lived their usefulness and modify others to come to current requirements of the times. Congress gets paid the same either way and there is probably tons of monies that could be saved in the process. I think it an idea that is surely come to its time.

General Thanksgiving

By the President of the United States of America,

A Proclamation

City of New York, October 3, 1789

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee 78 requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanks-giving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th. day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
